You would hope there is a balance of where can they make some money, exposure, playing time, development, and success of the program. A lot of it depends on the pro potential of the player. Not much pro potential might equal get me my money now, no matter what. But, every once in a while you get the Cade Cunningham who doesn't care if they'll likely miss the tournament they just want the most minutes with the ball in their hands. More of it, I'll assume, also has to do with the staff telling players who we are likely to land and who is likely to return before all of that stuff is announced. If I'm a SG from a smaller school looking to move to a bigger program and Pope tells me Oweh is going to return, I'm not too excited about UK anymore.
I wish it would be what it was intended to be. The kids can market themselves for businesses, sign autographs for money, etc and not this pay for play. I know there are loopholes to do it according to guidelines, but some of these kids are asking for the amount of money they would make on an NBA contract, which is wild.
