Suggs plays with a lot more strength and reminds me more of a better version of Andrew Harrison. Sallis reminds me more of SGA.
My main point is they will both play the same role for Few. Easy choice for Sallis IMO. Especially given the dumpster fire at UK. Anything the fans at UK did just helped to make his decision. But it wasn't the main factor in any way IMO. Gonzaga is taking in talent now for good reason. So many pros to going there compared to the blue bloods at the moment.
I will also add that Sallis' recruitment was swinging away from UK well before the kneeling. It had more to with the way this season unfolded and the general mess it was. Fans were obviously a large part of the public drama this season, but we cannot forget that Cal also had absolutely no control of this season. It was an absolute train wreck from the beginning. Fans lashing out because of how terrible this team was, and at how argumentative Cal was, basically mocking them at times all contributed to the ultimate cooling of more recruits than just Sallis these last few months. Cal is holding this thing together with string right now. The UK basketball ship is as stuck as that thing in the Suez canal. People need to recognize this. Recruits and their families are.
This is why as a fan it makes you feel so powerless when the program you love starts to flail--and maybe implode.
I've witnessed it three times in my lifetime, first with Shame and then at the very end of Tubby and again with Gillispie. We aren't quite there yet with Cal but some of the things that have happened are reminiscent of the end of Tubby's era. In the last two years with Tubby I definitely got the feeling that he had lost his way. Even some of his comments to the media after losses suggested that he really had very little fire. You sensed that a little with Cal this year.
I think Cal's situation this year
was that he had three absolutely cant miss guys just fail miserably. Three he counted as starters, then whatever happened with Brooks that he truly never got completely over. Pretty much unheard of. Head coach cant go to media and say 'these guys just dont have it'... even though it was pretty obvious.
He got left with pretty much just throwing up his hands and having to look for something, anything positive to say.
Wow! Can't believe they hired a guy with no college coaching record. He had a sketchy resume as an NBA head coach. I guess it could be worse. We could be Indiana fans. I am sure they aren't happy about the hire. I will work with an IU fan tonight. Can't wait to see what he thinks.
