Joking aside…it’s the way the game is played. OSU got Cade Cunningham away from us this way. If you want Duren make a hire. Hire the guy Miami hired at a raise. If you don’t want him then proceed with who you’ve got.

There's another option, and that's the philosophy that if it takes hiring a guy to get him at your school he might not be worth it in the first place.

Of course Cal has already gone down that road once before with Dajuan Wagner. That worked out but other situations don't.

I'm not 100% opposed to it but you don't want to be stuck with this guy afterward in your program that you only got because of his connection to one player.

Just depends on how bad you want the player. I doubt it takes a ten year contract for the connection to get the player. I wonder if Cade’s brother is still working at OSU.

Looked it up. OSU and Cannen have “agreed to part ways.” He really put down some roots. It’s a dirty business.

Here's my two cents on this:

Generally you want the absolute best players you can get.

Cal in particular has shown a willingness to go after the best players and find ways to get them. One of the first things he said in his opening press conference back in (gulp) 2009 was that he had been hired to recruit the best of the best.

There's been a lot of fuss made over these kinds of players at Kentucky. I immediately think about John Wall and the incredible lengths Kentucky apparently went through with him. And then there's the players he didn't get but tried his very best to (remember Trae Young and all the stories about Cal trying to land him).

So just in that context Cal has really gone to great lengths to get guys. As discussed, he's hired assistant coaches before in the player's family.

Sometimes those players net you titles, sometimes they fall short. But I think in Cal's mind it's all worth it or he wouldn't do it.

Cal is clearly a "get me the best players and all the rest will shake out" kind of coach. I agree with him in a lot of ways...but there's a point where you have to draw the line and not disgrace your program. All over college basketball the last few years coaches haven't appreciated that line enough.

Seems like no one is very confident right now in picking anyone. Pretty crazy that no one is sticking their neck out with a crystal ball pick either.

I get the draw to play for Penny, but what has he shown that he can do to help these kids prepare for the NBA? It's not like he has had much success winning so far, not like Juwan Howard has.

Sure wish he would've went to Orlando, with Coach K and Roy retiring Cal would've been at the top of the food chain for recruiting.

I read that too GOCAT... I was just throwin the idea out there that if JD selects college, and now that Bates reclassifying will they team-up? Bates would have to stay two years if he goes the college or the pro route; which route is he willing to stay for two years?

I'm a little confused by NBA rule; I see one year removed from HS but then this thing about age 19. If that's the case, does it affect JD too? He doesn't turn 18 until this Fall and NBA draft is normally in the Spring?

Penny is trying to sell as a former NBA player he is more in tune with this generation (he's not on the older end like the blue blood/big name program coaches) and he staffed experienced NBA coach...and added Rasheed Wallace. *shrugging shoulders*
