I don't know if I agree with this. It depends on those transfers and how good they are. If you recall, Texas Tech also made the title game a couple years ago and they had a bunch of transfers.
Also next year is going to be way different. There are going to be so many players out there available. In most years you'll have four, maybe five big-time transfers. This year there are going to maybe be triple digits.
I really think somebody will build a championship team out of the transfer market.
Someone may build a championship team out of the transfer market, but I bet it will be a team that spends a year or two together. I really think Baylor is the way of the future and the way forward. And my fear is that Cal won't be able to help himself and will keep recruiting over people instead of giving them time to develop.Comment

This is why I'd love to have Jackson back. Having an all-SEC guy coming back as the glue along with Mintz, Toppin, Ware, and Tshiebwe who was with the team late would be a good deal of experience..for Cal.
Otherwise it will be about having the requisite talent and the guardplay to do it. Who he signs at the point guard position will be the big question now.
Because Cal has built championship contenders out of freshmen. I'm sure he could do it with transfers in this environment, where so many good transfers will be available. The bigger issue for me is point guard. Cal has proven that when he has disastrous teams, it begins with having very sketchy point guards.Comment

I hope the ranking ends up being modest though when it comes out. I like UK with a chip on its shoulder.Comment

MJ says a text he got says Marcus Carr will be at UK by next Tuesday. This texter has been very accurate. TIFWIWComment

Gary Parrish ( who I can't stand) had a great point today. He went back 18 (I think) NCAA title winners and showed how every single one had at least one guy who could have/should have/was thought to be going pro that returned instead. UK is losing guys it shouldn't lose and certainly not retuning anyone who could leave and until they do I think it's going to be tough to get back to the top.👍 1Comment

Sure, I understand the transfer market is here to stay. But Cal's strategy has been recruit one and dones and put a team together, which worked until it didn't. If his strategy is to just substitute those with transfer one and done players, that's just the same situation we're in.

Getting a few great freshmen and pairing them with experienced transfers where needed to go along with 3-4 returnees is the perfect recipe for what CBB is now.Comment

3-4 returnees isn't the normal for UK the last few years.
Scrambling to assemble a roster in the off season has become the normal for this program. We don't return players, we no longer land the truly elite recruits, and team chemistry is something that might develop by conference play.
Not only would Terrence Jones not return to UK after a freshman year now, he'd probably not commit in the first place.Comment

But I will put in that Isaiah Jackson is an elite player (doubt he returns). We also have a couple of possibilities for elite on the transfer circuit. Tshiebwe is probably not elite, but there was talk about him leaving after his solid freshman year so he kind of is in that boat that Gary Parrish mentions. Marcus Carr I think is potentially elite. Some guys are not elite but then they turn 22, 23 and magical things happen to them. Baylor as somebody else said was led by a guy who once committed to Presbyterian.
Not trying to sell anybody on Calipari at this point, but I want to stress what a monumental break we got with COVID in the context of this program right now.Comment

We have to figure out how to retain some players and we must target recruits that actually see value in this staff...not just the Kentucky Experience.
I think that means an addition to the staff and more accurate early evaluation of recruits.
Just my opinion and I understand fully that it won't happen with this staff.Comment

They want exposure. There's nothing wrong with that, either, but the main thing is that they want exposure. The Kentucky Effect.Comment
