Why was the "Transfer Portal" necessary though, as compared to prior practice? Is it simply to help give guys from lesser known programs an opportunity to announce their availability in a way that is more organized.

In the past guys who have transferred let it be known through the channels. We've had some strong transfers before, and I assume they not only let it be known in the channels but also with schools where they had interest.

I might be wrong on that.

This new era though basically couples with social media/blogs to put it on a billboard.

    It's free agency.

The transfer portal I think is another product of the weight of the NBA on the college game.

Guys seemingly come to college under the belief that it’s a way station before the pros. Because basketball, unlike football, is a sport where very young players can compete with pros on a given night, so many of these guys come out of AAU programs where they’re under the assumption that they’re just as good as one and dones. When things don’t work out, enter the portal.

I believe Sankey is not a fan of schools rushing to the conference office and demanding a waiver of the rule. That the schools should change the rule not constantly ask for a waiver.
I still believe any change in the SEC rule will have to be driven by a FB player.

Free agency, all of the time.
Some would say players should be able to play at a different school if they'd like to, with no penalty.

Also, the portal is there so all schools know that that player is available and looking. It frees up the lines of communication.

It will be driven, and ultimately changed, by the fact other conferences are adopting it. Competition is good for everyone.

Sankey has shown he wants competitive SEC basketball. If that means waiving that rule, he will. And should.

It’s ridiculous for the NCAA to allow something but the conference step in and override it. It makes no sense in the particular situation we find ourselves in.

Do you have any idea when the conference will make a decision on this. The longer they wait the greater the disadvantage SEC schools will have competing for transfers. One has to wonder if we wouldn’t already have offered the kid from Auburn( and probably signed him) if they had acted quickly like the ACC did.

I don't know but it would be super disappointing if it cost us a player.

Not a transfer, but Hunter Sallis is making his decision this morning.

Sallis was at one time thought to be a heavy UK lean but I haven't heard anything positive about him in months. Gonzaga seems to be the favorite barring a surprise.

At one point we could be in this position with a recruit that could be pivotal and still have hope to somehow get the commitment.

This morning...I have no such hope.

Have you heard if there is a deadline to enter the transfer portal? Coaches would be hesitant to offer a scholarship for fear of a better player deciding to announce.

This makes sense. And I'm guessing it wasn't the complaining about the basketball that angered them.

Kyle Tucker backed up what I’ve heard for a while: BBN’s bad behavior ran off Hunter Sallis. He was coming to UK until we showed our asses this season.
