55 Big Brother, Derrick Johnson, DT (1997-2001)

Bonus: Alvis Johnson with his pride and joy. Alvis was head coach at Harrodsburg High School and because his sons were grown men at an early age and showed a knack for the game, he played them on his team from the second and third grade (since the high school athletic regulations did not prohibit participation by age). Rules were quickly changed and these unicorns were resigned to wait for their junior high school years to resume their varsity careers.

Kentucky 21, LSU 13. Kentucky was 5-1 at that point. The 1983 team that finished 6-5-1 after losing a second half lead to West Virginia in the bowl game beat LSU, but the 9-3 1984 team that came from behind to beat Wisconsin in its bowl game lost to LSU (8-3-1 and Sugar Bowl) and Georgia (7-4-1 and Citrus Bowl) and Florida (9-1-1 and on probation) and that was it.

The 1983 team didn’t lose to any team that finished with fewer than 9 wins.

Those were two good teams - especially considering that the 1982 team was 0-10-1.

Claiborne’s next five seasons always seemed so close to being successful.
