Might be a dumb question and I may have missed it, but did the SEC officially say that in conference transfers wouldn't have to sit out a year? I know that was a big conversation with the Auburn kid.If we pick up Wheeler today, and Isaiah Jackson decides to return, I believe we're a Top 10 team.
If Jackson opts for the NBA (or UK decides it can't delay filling its front line), I hope we can bag ASU transfer Marcus Bagley. I still can't believe we aren't contenders for U Mass transfer Tre Mitchell, particularly because of Coach Cal's ties to U Mass.Comment

Sounds like Wheeler is a guy who can get into the lane and take his man off the dribble, which is what this team needs, as well as an Immanuel Quickley/Brandon Knight type of guard.
I haven't been this excited about basketball in the Cal era in a long time, probably since the 2015 season. Between basketball and football, I'm not sure I've ever anticipated fall/winter sports like this.Comment

Yeah, I think Cal was frustrated last year a lot because of the lack of speed/explosiveness at the lead guard position.Comment

Askew wasn't an atrocious defender because he was kind of hard-nosed.
But he was definitely the slowest guard Kentucky has had in the Cal era. He didn't have that extra gear you almost have to have to stand out at this level. If you don't have it you better be able to shoot the lights out, and he obviously couldn't do that either.
The downshot of these quick, skittery guards like Wheeler is that they often have trouble converting in the paint because of their size. Tyler Ulis offset this because he was a master with angles and he was tough as all hell. He could also shoot the ball out to the NBA line, which allowed him to just loft the ball up and over (much) bigger defenders.
Wheeler apparently doesn't have the shot but he seems to have a knack for finding people.👍 1Comment
