Kentucky 14, Maryland 7, 1979.
Maryland finished the season 7-4, after defeating North Carolina (8-3-1 after beating Michigan in the Gator Bowl) and Clemson at Clemson (the Tigers went to the Peach Bowl). Maryland’s loss to Kentucky kept it from one of those bowls.
Maryland’s record in the preceding seasons was 9-2-1,l (the tie was against Kentucky), 11-1 (undefeated in the regular season), 8-4, and 9-3, all under Hall of Fame coach a d former Kentucky player and Bear Bryant assistant coach Jerry Claiborne, a native of Hopkinsville. Maryland had won a total of nine games in the five seasons prior to Claiborne’s arrival as head coach. Among the many What If’s in Kentucky football history is what might’ve happened had Kentucky hired Claiborne in or near his prime, in any of the years he was the head coach at Virginia Tech or Maryland from 1961 through 1981.
