I often wonder how many of our fans reach out to the players and their families on social media and we never know about it.
A good rule of thumb as a fan is to never, ever, and I mean never tweet, Facebook, email, write, or make any personal contact with a player or recruit. Ever.👍 1Comment

Should be no deadline as long as the paperwork to enroll in the new school is put in in time. I don't see why there would be. A person can leave a college at any point and enroll somewhere else.Comment

I understand that but how would a coach know to offer one player if another better player is rumored to be entering the portal? Seems a deadline to enter for the 21-22 season would be make sense.Comment

Same thing happens every year though. This is the risk you run when you're in the game of recruiting players. We've been in several situations in the past where our roster looked filled but a better player opened up his recruitment or decided to transfer, but we had no space. Doesn't happen nearly as much with Cal because Cal is always operating below the scholarship limit.
The whole thing was built to make it easier for players. Slapping a deadline on it defeats the purpose of why they did it this way.Comment

Yes. And I would say some of that correspondence was not pretty at all.
Have no idea if that's what Sallis (or his family) objected to, but I can see it.Comment

The current transfer rule is just further evidence of how the great game of basketball is slowly being ruined. Put it back that way it was, retrain officials, remove the monitor, make a one and done impossible and we will enjoy basketball again.Short rant:
Whoever came up with the “transfer portal†should be reprimanded. It serves to celebrate and imo even encourage athletes to switch programs, helps provide the footing for a second recruitment, and frankly helps erode any hope of continuity these teams ever had.
Free agency, all of the time.John 3:3

I understand what you are saying but players have a deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft so isn’t having a deadline for entering the portal reasonable?

i think the transfer rule was largely due to a coach can pack up and leave any time they want for a better job or if they get fired. The player they recruited and built those relationships we always hear about is either stuck where they are or had to sit a year. Yes, of course Will had a great point that if a kid doesnt make the big show quick enough they just go somewhere they can....but we still have to face the reality that with these player transfer rules there is no guarantee that the person that recruited and promised his family he would be looked after will be there when he shows up to college....if he signs an LOI.Comment

Not really. They should be allowed to leave anytime they want. They aren’t indentured servants.
I think the one-year sit rule is a good one but don’t mind them waiving it this year. It’s going to lead to some wild rosters though, including ours.

The football thing is already happening big time ... just a couple weeks ago 120 kids in the transfer portal and a bunch were quarterbacks. The last 2 years it was transfers that led teams to the playoffs. It definitely does open the door for the rich to get richer.Comment

Never said they were indentured servants. I am speaking in regards to roster numbers and scholarships. How are schools and coaches expected to make a offer without knowing if some better player is going to become available the next day or the next week or the next month. My point is if a player is considering transferring, why not have a date to declare so schools can decide on which players to pursue??
Is there a limit on how many times a player can transfer?
