It is just as much luck as anything to put together a team of Mcdonalds all americans who stay around for 3-4 years. Jackson was a top 10 recruit, but wasn't a superstar at first so he wasn't one and done. Roy has been quoted numerous times saying he has recruited most of the kids that picked UK, it's not like he hasn't wanted the players we got. There is no way to see the future and be able to recruit one or two, one and done studs, along with a few top 50 players who may stick around for a few years like WCS.
It takes a nice mix to win a title in my opinion, just like in 2012, you have to have a stud recruit or two, then get lucky and have potential first and second round picks come back for a second year....Jones, Lamb, and still be lucky enough to have a contributing senior, Miller. That in my opinion is your recipe for success, so to say that Roy is a great coach because he wins without one and dones is a joke, he just had top recruits that didn't pan out that stuck around a few years and got better. And I am just talking about Roys teams since Calipari has been here and the whole one and done era really took off.👍 1Comment

If this were last year's draft he probably would be in the first round. Not sure about this draft...although there are a few teams who do take real risks with players late in the first. You always see foreign guys through there who are 18 and won't play in the NBA for two or three years.Comment

Originally posted by Downes Van ZandtWere you not the one who, back when Diallo joined the team, said that Cal wouldn't put himself in a situation to miss on another guard prospect* because of Diallo? Yet here we are.
I assumed Diallo was going to be at Kentucky next season, and he still may be. The decision to test looks like it wasn't an easy one; he waited until almost literally the last minute. I doubt Cal is surprised by it but I do think much was contingent on him being here next year.Last edited by Joneslab; 05-02-2017, 02:28 PM.Comment

Originally posted by FriendsofcoalI'm sure I can go back into some older threads and find where I predicted this but I won't. Nearly everyone thought I was crazy and especially you, Will.
I wouldn't say anyone was crazy, but the whole point of that thread was whether or not the guy would end up in the NBA, not whether he would test the waters. As of May 2, he's not in the NBA. It could turn out that way, but then it again it might not.
What was predicted in that thread IIRC was that Diallo was just "using" Kentucky in some way. I just don't buy that at all. Diallo got very little out of UK. The only thing he did was get John Calipari's stamp of approval. That certainly means something...but that alone won't get him in the first round.Comment

But is four months of practice going to make him an NBA first-rounder? Doubtful. If he's a first-rounder it's because of his athleticism and size for his position. He'll still be raw and unpolished and all the things kids who have never played against elite competition in real games always are.
He could have just as easily done what he's doing now had he gone to UConn or anywhere else. I don't think the Diallo family's idea was to come to Kentucky, milk it for four months, and then hightail it out.
I see his testing the waters as exactly what it is. Testing the waters.Comment

I've thought all along that Diallo is a first rounder this year if he wants to go. He's the 3rd best pro prospect on our roster. He should have played this season. There's no way the NBA passes on a guy with his potential.
He's a future star in the league.Comment
