How do the Euro leagues now approach NIL to keep young players eligible to play college?

Did Kanter get paid as a youth, who knows?

Would a NIL agreement have changed that for him and allowed him to play college?

If you recall, on paper he’d been paid a bit over 30k and his father argued that it had been placed in an account. They offered to “pay it back” and the NCAA refused to accept that in order to restore his status as an amateur.

Yes I think that was the year the NCAA determined anything under 30K could be repaid and miss about 3 games. 30K or more you’re ineligible. Then of course it changed the next year.

Yes a player is obligated to perform the duties specified in the contral or be in breach. It's just like any other contract. Nothing prevents the contract from allowing either party to terminate the contract or specify to damages if they do.
I see it like this, but like you say, I’m not an attorney. Just reasoning through it. Allowing a player to get paid for companies using the player’s name, image and likeness (like the Donato’s commercial). I could be wrong. I’m sure everyone else had figured this new territory out already. Not sure where the booster’s contributions fit in, if they do.

Nothing official but looks like Ansley Almonor is about 99%.

If true, still need a scorer (Lanier or Robinson) with another big body in my opinion.

Would be another solid addition. Mature grown man with experience. Can shoot and score. I just wish a couple final roster spots would go to guys somewhere between incoming freshman and guys in their final year of eligibility. Just looking at year 2 and 3 of Pope’s tenure. But then again—I suppose the portal will be there again next summer. Maybe Perry, Noah and Garrison will be all the building blocks we really need.

I wouldn't mind seeing a young big 6'10 or more added to the team..

I think the current NIL climate is going to continue this process of "everyone" testing the portal each year. So just because UK gets a 2nd/3rd year player doesn't mean they won't jump again the following year.

Just remember - Duke lost 7 players to the portal. No coaching change involved. That was maybe the extreme, but it could also be a sign of the "norm" going forward.

Yeah I agree...but then you look over and see Kansas losing no one.

I think even in this new normal, if you want to be a true title contender you're going to have to keep a nucleus. Keep three or four key players, add three or four good freshmen, and then use the portal to round out the roster. I.e. the way UCONN just did it.

Teams that lose everybody and then have to rebuild aren't going to be the ones that surface in the last week of March without a lot of luck.

True. But I have hope Pope is building a program good players will enjoy being in and developing in. And if the money there is competitive I see no reason it couldn’t happen.

Pope will have to pretty much rebuild the roster again next year…and I must admit that I worry about that cycle for the first three years making it incredibly difficult for him.

Just have to hope that this year goes well enough that the fanbase remains rejuvenated and optimistic. If so, we just might be able to help him break out in terms of national recognition and subsequently recruiting ability.

There’s a tight margin for him here. I’m obviously rooting for him and the program to bounce back.

Definitely agree with sentiments: UK will have to find that formula for keeping some guys, bringing in a few high-level freshmen, and attracting some portal players. All 3 will be key and I think Uconn is clearly doing it best. Kansas while they didn't lose must to the portal, they weren't really themselves last year. Will it be a "one off" year or will it be a trend. We'll see.

My hope is that Pope creates an atmosphere of players wanting to be in the system for more than a year. UK has NIL money, so like anyone with a budget, Pope will have to balance the weight of a player he wants to bring onboard.

Perhaps the offense he ran at BYU will receive the "Kentucky effect". I honestly knew Pope was there, but hadn't seen a single BYU game. Could be a lot of players are that way. We always seem to see players wanting to shoot lots of 3s, no matter the 1-5 position. So now here is a system catered to that. There should be players anxious to play in it, I believe.

Good point about Duke but it also says a WHOLE lot about Mark Pope in a very short time.

Duke is scrambling to field a team while Pope is one piece away from being dangerous right now..

I think the money will always be there with Kentucky and if Pope is truly a player's coach, we should be fine, at least i hope..

                                Incoming BOOM!!!!

Not sure about today, don't think it's a prized catch, just filling a roster spot.

From what I read yesterday, Pope has narrowed it down and still hoping to land either Lanier, Poplar or Robinson. Don't think we will get two, just one of that group if we can get a committment.
