Short answer is yes. They can make you come back to Kentucky to testify. But a lot depends on what the grand jury wants from you. If it is just information and you are not the subject of the investigation then they may work out something for you. But what matters is you have to appear.

What is really unfair is that you, the subject of the investigation have no right to put up a defense in front of the grand jury. The grand jury does not have to question you. And if they do drag into the grand jury room you have no right to have a lawyer with you. Now the grand jury can allow you to have a lawyer but that is up to them.

What I really love about the grand jury system is that if one grand jury does not return a true bill, indictment, against you, the Commonwealth can bring the case back before to the next grand jury and keep doing this until there is an indictment issued.

A judge once told me he could get a ham sandwich indicted.

One thing that I believe is being overlooked is an event that happens in 2017. Karen Sypher's rejoining society. She was crazy beforehand, add on some jail time and this scandal. I really think it's gonna be too much for even Jurich/Ramsay to deal with, especially if the scandal is not entirely resolved.

I'd say coach Pitino will be long gone before 2017.

The Board of Trustees at UofL is going into a closed-door session today.

Doubt if anything comes of it at this point but it's still interesting. Still think something is worked out whereby Pitino announces his retirement in January and is allowed to step away with some dignity.

If he didn't know anything about this, he should be able to do that, same as Cal should be able to after Camby and Rose. (Cal knew about Rose, IMO, and I would say that Pitino knew at least a little about this situation.)

^ Probably discussing their options. You have to go behind closed doors to discuss personnel decisions.

What did Cal know about Rose? That he had been cleared to play by the NCAA?

Per the CJ's Tim Sullivan, no action was taken.

Haven't been following this too much lately, but I did find this article interesting. Listening to UL fans for the last several weeks, one thing is striking. UL is first and foremost a school, a school of higher education. It's not a whore house. Athletics is supposed to be a sideline, a distraction, something fun for the school. I certainly do sympathize with alumni, students, and faculty.

The NCAA began to send Rose letters during the season. They sent at least two different letters asking him for an interview, and those letters went unanswered. IIRC the last letter was sent in March before the NCAA Tournament began. No response.

Cal knew something was amiss, IMO. But if I'm a coach and the player had already been cleared, I probably wouldn't have responded to the NCAA either. You'd have to worry that they were going to declare him ineligible at a crucial time of the season. I guess Memphis's calculus was that you ride it out and try to battle the allegations after the fact.

On the other hand, addressing it right at the start could have prevented a lot of the damage to Cal's reputation. Probably wouldn't have made it to the National Championship game, but that wound up being for naught anyway.

I think if you polled coaches about how they would have handled it they'd probably be split. Cal, who's always had a rogue's reputation anyway and was in the middle of a historic season, probably thought he could damage control it after the national title.

Neither happened, but Memphis didn't get hit too hard...probably because the NCAA actually never proved Rose didn't take the test. (He likely didn't; a few other members of his HS team, IIRC, were involved in the cheating operation.) But their penalty was the removal of the banner, returning the money they earned from the NCAA tourney that year, and paying back the money that Cal had given to Reggie Rose, D. Rose's brother, for flying and eating with the team. Not hardly the crushing wasteland that some national pundits and Memphis fans want to portray.

This is why when UK fans get into the thing about UofL taking down their banner, I'm pretty much unmoved by that. It's the silliest thing the NCAA does. It's meaningless. Cutting them out of the postseason in the future and/or cutting scholarships is a much tougher penalty.

Just wait until the Cards start going to away games. The local media may want to stay hush hush about this and let it dissipate over time, but the away crowds won't let it go.

Actually the Louisville media--except those who are on the payroll for UofL, like Drew Deener--have been pretty good about hitting the university with tough questions. Tim Sullivan of the CJ just had an article this morning about how the university has to remake its reputation.

After the BOT spokesperson came out yesterday, the first thing he did was go into brochure-like puffery about the university and its mission. One of the reporters asked him something like, "Do you even personally know a UoL professor?" LOL.

The CJ has been pretty good about trying to get at answers. The problem is that UofL has just curled into a ball of silence, as I'm sure Chuck Smrt, their counsel, has told them to. Jurich has disappeared off the face of the planet.

I think my biggest issue is that Cal had to know even before the allegations. You know that a school is keeping tabs on every single recruits status, be it what crucial classes they might need to pass, and their potential SAT test dates. I find it hard to believe Cal was oblivious to Rose's initial failed score and then the "miraculous" score at a totally different testing facility.

Did the NCAA clear him - sure, with the understanding that Rose better have taken the test himself.

Would any coach have played Rose after the NCAA cleared him? Probably, I don't really know. But a) Cal had to know *something* was fishy and b) Cal already had the UMass issue (while separate and unrelated and I know he turned Camby in, etc.) - it was still "on the books" as happening under Cal's watch.

After that (and especially now) Cal has to tread cautiously. I hope he's staying away from ANYTHING that remotely smells bad. regardless of what the NCAA may or may not say.

Agree!!! The games were played; fans were screaming in the stands, sports bars and homes. Souvenirs were bought. So you take down a banner and give the trophy back?
