Our interest in seemingly every transferring guard with a pulse should have been our first clue, but there’s a growing belief that Mintz won’t return.

This could be. And it could be because we had such a bad season and now these families have some leverage they didn't have a few years ago.

If you're being recruited by UK and you know they're bringing in John Wall, that's one thing. But if you're being recruited into this situation now, a family has way more clout where they can go to Cal and make certain demands about playing time, not being recruited over, etc.

If I had to guess I would say the Powell situation came down to, "If he signs, then you can't go out and get another guard." Kentucky wasn't down for that (which they shouldn't have been). I imagine that's where the split happened.

That's all speculation obviously. But if it went down like that then UK was in the right. That said, they appear to be scrambling a little now and that's super concerning.

No. Way too early to call this “full scramble mode.” Still lots of guys who have decisions to make.

Really confused by this. I don't see how he is a significant player in a big time program anytime soon.

Well he has 4 years of eligibility and doesn't have to sit out a year so we shall see.

Powell wasn't going to be an option regardless of Mintz. He wanted UK but Cal/UK did not want him and never offered. They each had VERY differing visions on what Powell's role at UK would be and (from what I am told) Cal was not a big fan of the Powell's collective thoughts/attitude.

He may not have been concerned about what Mintz did, but Powell wanted to play for Kentucky and I'm not told anything, but we will never know why he was rejected by Cal.

If they land Washington, are they still going for a transfer PG?

Forgive me for thinking that going into the season with two unproven freshmen point guards is exactly what we were trying to avoid.

That’s what I’m worried about. I like Washington, but not as our primary answer at PG. I’d feel much better if we land him and another vet. Haven’t heard anything to suggest Cal would stop recruiting Carr, for example, if Washington commits, but you have to wonder if that spot would be too crowded by then.

So tough to juggle these situations. Of course you want the young talent, but some of that talent might need a couple years and you hate to have them ran off because of their position being loaded on the roster. With Skyy coming in next year, I would sure like to have a sophomore Hickman and Washington on the roster, but that could all get blown up if Cal brings in more transfer guards and they don't get to play much this season.

Am I overthinking this?
