The Coronavirus and College Basketball's Postseason

Anybody else like me, where they'll be walking around and a jolt of excitement will hit them. Then this thought will come in: "Ooh, basketball all weekend."

Then immediately there'll be this realization that'll hit me about what's occurred. Then I get sad.

I want to say if the stupid Rudy Gobert think didn't happen we wouldn't be here. But then again, I saw a report that an official at one of the smaller tournaments had gotten it, so that probably would've been enough to shut things down.

Still, I blame Gobert for much of this. We at least may have gotten basketball this weekend without that, possibly.

Sports channels are showing reruns. Even saw a corn hole tournament being televised lol 😂. Just have a lost feeling without sports. Must be a sports addict

One Shining Moment

This is a long article, but it's fascinating.

One point the guy makes that's interesting is about how contagious measles is. It has an off-the-charts rating as far as contagion goes, well higher than these flus.

Another point that's relevant to this thread is that corona virus is different from the flu because of how unknown corona is. The flu is stable, he says; you can look at it from year to year and guess where it's going to go. They don't know how corona might mutate, or really how it's going to behave. I'm sure that's one of the reasons for all these cancellations.

Another interesting thing he writes about is the thing about hospital beds. He points out how it doesn't take much to throw a hospital in disarray. Even before corona virus hit, I was watching a committee meeting here in the State Capitol about rural hospitals. A Republican Senator was arguing that our rural hospitals in this state are dying. He claimed that it was an issue of dire concern. I've thought about those comments a lot as we watch this situation, and although you only have a few positive results in Kentucky's rural areas so far, the thought that it could happen is worrying.

It is truly scary. Pikeville Medical Center is the true outlier, but it will take some luck in the future to help sustain this behemoth they have built. I worry that they might have become too big, but it is important to keep in mind just how much area they service now that their trauma center is up and running.

ARH has essentially bought the eastern most aspect of the state aside from Kings Daughters in Ashland and their plethora of outlying specialty clinics.

It is tough for a single hospital to exist right now, darn tough.

What a weird time we are living in. I know the health of people is way more serious and important than sports but what the heck are we going to do for the next month?

No sports, all my kids's activities are cancelled, we are supposed to avoid malls, movie theaters, trampoline places, indoor tourist attractions, etc... Next week is spring break, the weather sucks and I have no clue what the heck to do to keep my kids from driving me insane.

We are losing a local hospital. Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital is closing in the next month or so. Sad and scary.😢

Sorry, a couple of the ER physicians are joining us. Very sorry to hear this news. KDMC is working to increase their ER capacity in anticipation.

This whole thing sucks for everyone--especially those at elevated health risk. But from a sports/ especially fans perspective--think how bad this sucks for Dayton and SDSt. How often do they feels like they have a shot at a title? Nearly never.

Imagine you're one of these small schools who hasn't been in awhile. You finally have the team to get there, you know it's probably your last shot for many years, and then it's cancelled.

My alma mater hasn't been since 1984. My son's high school has never been. To get a shot to play in Rupp Arena for a state title only to see it get completely scrubbed would be something that would likely haunt me for the rest of my life were I a player or coach on one of those teams.

Unless it has changed, the KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said the girls and boys tournaments were postponed. Personally, I hope this holds.

Our local high school team is undefeated and may not have a chance to compete in the state tournament.

My high school won the 5th region this year. We went (and won!) in 2000 (Antwain Barbour went off and became a highly sought after recruit that weekend).

It’s something you remember for the rest of your life and I feel for the teams who may not make it back next year. I hope they can find a way to host it.
