Seeding absolutely matters. When you get out of the top 3 seeds, statistically you can pretty much guarantee you aren't winning a national championship. That's only happened 5 times in the history of the tournament.

That shouldn't matter with this Kentucky team because I think we'll get a top 3 seed. And also this is going to be a weirder tournament than usual because there's so much balance...although I do think UCONN and Purdue are a cut above the rest.

Cal's two most surprising NCAA runs came with a 4 seed and an 8 seed...but both those teams had to have a series of buzzer beaters to make it to the FF.

I say this in regards to the parity these days. Any team can knock another off, it's not like the old days in my opinion when you could pencil in the wins...

Even with parity, a 1 or 2 seed has won 7 out of the last 8 tournaments. Going back to 2000, a 1 seed has won 16 times.

Generally in college basketball there will be two pretty powerful 1 seeds, and then you get into a morass of about 8 other teams who are pretty similar. I think we might be in that group this year: a step down from UCONN and Purdue, but similar to maybe 10 other teams who could win it if things fall the right way.

Which is saying something, because it was only a couple weeks ago that very few Kentucky fans thought we had any chance in the world. This team has positioned itself for a run...and its seed is going to show that next Sunday.

^ I guess I'd put Houston in that group with UCONN and Purdue.

Thing about Houston is I don't know if they can score enough to win a title? Seems like every time I turn them on the score is 29 to 25 in the second half. (UCONN has a little of that as well. Very, very methodical team.)

Kentucky at #9 in the AP poll.

I’m a little superstitious so I have to admit I like that spot!

I haven’t watched them a ton but I don’t see much gap between Purdue and Houston. I think it’s a top three then a gap this year. Doesn’t mean the next 6 or 7 couldn’t win it all. But the top 3 would have to be truly upset to not make the final 4.

Providence beat Creighton. Could help our case for a 2 seed.

NC State is my 2nd favorite team tonight—they beat Duke. Duke’s case for the 4th 1 seed is getting hazy. The committee will try to find a metric that qualifies them for a one seed and that will be the metric of choice for the year. Perhaps offensive efficiency on neutral courts on weekday games?

Marquette getting beat would pretty much top off a fairly colossal night.

Came close on this one. Villanova took Marquette to overtime but still lost.

Think Kentucky probably needs to win tonight to seal up a 3 seed.

^^^Probably so. But win tonight and tomorrow, maybe another key loss for someone and a 2 may not be out of reach

For a 2 seed you probably want Kentucky to win (duh) and then teams like Iowa St., Marquette, and Baylor to lose.

Problem is, Iowa St. and Baylor play each other tonight in the late game of the Big XII.

Two consecutive losses didn’t hurt Duke’s standing at all, and after getting demolished on two recent occasions, Kansas stays put, as well.

What’s that, Mr. Bracketologist? Kansas is dealing with injuries, you say?

Kentucky hasn’t been fully healthy at any point this season. Guess that should make us a one seed.

It just ends up making me angry (and hurting my brain) when I start trying to make sense of all this nonsense.

In the end, if Kentucky plays its best, there's precisely two teams in the entire field that can beat them. And we've already beaten one of them this year.

                            So...

Nothing came out of Selection Sunday in worse shape than our old and trusted friend, the NET. It was roundly blasted by everybody from analysts to Rick Pitino himself, who basically crapped on it and then set it on fire.

I noticed this morning that Brad Wachtel, a guy who probably thinks about the bracket more than anybody, pointed out that the NET was never intended to be used to figure out which teams should be included in the field.

Which is pretty weird. If it wasn't meant to be used for that and the whole "quad" system of ranking wins was just arbitrary...then why have the NET in the first place?

Because, Will, there are years when it is the most beneficial metric for Duke and UNC. Those are the years it is very important to the committee. Whether it was designed for that purpose or not. Fans—and teams, for that matter—are not supposed to know what criteria are important in a given year until just after the brackets are revealed.
