Seems as if most block/charge fouls are being called a charge. Maybe they are but I know most are charges this tournament.

It's because defenders have been taught how to fall hard.

Throw head back, fling body back, preferably get feet off the ground, crash hard on back...it's an art. And officials continue to reward the defense on plays where the defense is only doing choreography.

The block/charge needs to be completely overhauled in the college game. Too many flops, too many secondary defenders sliding under offensive players who are just trying to make plays to score, too many guys leaning into the offensive player's body and then using that leverage to propel themselves back to give the illusion of a foul.

You can fall down in college basketball and get a call a disproportional amount of the time. Referees love to reward that, maybe because it gives instant gratification (defensive team goes crazy when it happens) and you can offset it on the other end by giving the other team one. It's a thing that usually balances itself out because everybody's doing it on virtually every possession.

^^^^ Saw a defender reach around the player dribbling the ball. Made contact with the arm of the guy dribbling and you would have thought he had hit him with a sledgehammer. His head flew back, arms were flailing and then he went down. Just so much choreography anymore.

It would be easy to lay blame on the officials, but they're trained to act and react when they see something like that. In the heat of the game it would be almost reflex to blow the whistle when something like that is happening in real time.

I'm kind of torn on this. I definitely think the way guys do it--and, let's face it, the way coaches coach it--makes it really hard for officials.

But on the other hand, I do wonder if there might be some...incentive for these refs when they call a charge/offensive foul. Because it happens so dang much. I just wonder if they like the way everybody explodes in joy when they call it, and also it's something that, once you call it on one end, you've got to be consistent. You can't just give a team one and then when another team does it not give them the same call.

It's like a Pandora's box has been opened on charges and the officials have been unable to close it. And coaches and players have just milked the heck out of the situation.

Block/charge is already a difficult call especially when the Lead (on the baseline) is trained to be so far toward the sideline instead of in close to the lane. And they train the Center (other side of court and close to FT line extended) to make that call. Remember, defense determines block or charge and nobody has a better look at defensive position than the Lead in tight. It would so simple if officials were trained and expected to call fouls and violations like the rule book says, but the NCAA ignores the way rules are written and trains officials to let this and that go. If I had called games the way they do now, I would have been sent home in a hurry. This almost by itself is ruining the game. Along with the monitor.

If Porter Mosier goes to the Final Four again, or at least the Elite 8, he's gotta get some offers from bigger schools. This Loyola team is solid and plays fantastic defense. Their big man Krutwig probably won't go pro but he is a hell of a college player. I like this team.

Welp, Loyola is ice cold now. Someone has to shut this Pac 12 nonsense up, lol.

Looks like Loyola bowing out. Some fine defense for both teams, but some really, really bad shooting as well. Loyola was all the way up to 20% about five into the second half.

Good shooting team that had a bad day against the team that was predicted to finish last in the Pac 12. My goodness, I hope every Pac 12 team loses. Just a weird year because of Covid. The Pac 12 is a garbage conference.

Baylor’s guards are taking over. The game isn’t over, but Villanova is starting to make pressure related mistakes. They have 1 to remaining. This game has had a ton of deflections.

Nova goes down. Played on solid play, luck and emotion.
losing one of your best to injury is a hard way to go into the tourney, but they had Baylor for a half.

Baylor became the more physical team in the second half, finally started making some shots around the basket too.

Tired of hearing about Buddy. And the way to beat a zone is 10' to 15' jumpers. Of course you have to have someone that can shoot them. Like Jack Givens.
