That's an incredible offer from a school that had to petition the Kentucky General Assembly to help them find the money to set up a television studio just a month or so ago.

I met with a guy yesterday who's a big time Louisville donor and we talked about Cardinal basketball, minor league baseball, and the thought of a NBA team in Louisville, Louisville sports in general. The one thing he said to me that stood out more than anything is that the city and fans of LOUISVILLE have never supported a losing team. Whoever takes the Louisville job would be stupid in my opinion especially with the death penalty looming, who would want to be in that situation? If Mack wants money, he can get it elsewhere and win at the same time....

There is no death penalty looming. It will be years, if ever, when the NCAA gets around to dealing with the mountain of wrongdoings that is coming out.

UL is absolutely a top 10 job and he would be stupid to turn down 7 million. And he is a good enough coach to have them very competitive in 2 years.

I agree that a $49 million contract would be stupid to pass up if you're Mack. I'm not sure why we agree he's a great coach, but that's a stupid amount of money to turn down.

I'm not sure he's a great coach but he's a great coach for them right now. I thought the plan was to bring on Padgett and let him weather the storm. It looks like they want to sidestep the storm and try and get right back out into the sun.

To me it all seems like pipe dream territory. You flash back a calendar year and every UofL fan you talked to acknowledged that they were in trouble. Maybe not from the NCAA, but just based on the numbers. This is a program that has not been able to recruit at all--and that's going to hit them very soon. You can't overcome that in college athletics.

But Mack puts a lot of that to rest because he's a big name, and he'd be a symbolic win for UofL. It would send a message that they're stabilized.

It that's the case, Nike to step up there game....

Is Mack Billy Gillispie 2.0 because i am looking at the weekend schedule and i don't see a time for when Xavier is playing this weekend? I don't think Louisville is a top 10 school , I think Rick Pitino and Papa John's money turned them into something they are not, i always said Louisville would be in trouble year in and year out playing in the ACC once Rick Pitino retired, Carolina and Duke will always be alright......

I have a hard time believing U of L's near-past doesn't rocket them to the top of the sh!t heap.

                  I hate Louisville, but...no way Louisville isn't a Top 10 school.

I do think J.Jennings' point has merit.

They were in the Metro not that long ago. I think Jurich did make them a top-10 job and was able to bring them back quickly after a situation where Denny Crum clearly overstayed his welcome. I remember when I first moved to Louisville and they were essentially a commuter university. That wasn't all that long ago. Early 2000s.

The question is what's left over in the coffers, and whether or not Mack (if he's the guy) is up for a re-build like the UofL job is going to be.

I'm just amazed that the money never dries up in big time sports. All that UL has had to pay out to fired coaches (and likely still will have to pay big $ to Jurich and Pitino), the money they've had to return to the NCAA, possible fines coming with additional charges--how is there always enough left to pay a coach the 3rd highest salary in all of college basketball? Sure they have a city-crippling great deal for the YUM Center but the fan base is not that large. Where does it all come from? Addidas still running the show?

And I agree with J above--its not just that I can't stand UL--I truly don't see what makes them a top 10 job even in good times. Once Jurich got them into a power conference its certainly a better job than it used to be but I'd say the top couple schools in each power conference are better jobs than UL. Unless of course going forward there is no one holding the coach accountable like Pitino with Jurich. That makes a pretty sweet gig. Till you get caught red-handed.

                        The television money is staggering.

I will say that in that meeting I mentioned above with the General Assembly, UofL came off as hurting pretty bad. As in: close to broke.

Of course this is a different deal and they have a chance to save their program, so they'll be able to find the money got Mack. Not convinced 7 million is an accurate figure but they'll have to significantly outdo whatever Xavier could offer.

Louisville could very well turn into a NC State team. Both have had troubles and NC State has never been the same since Valvano passed. Both Louisville and Raleigh have high college basketball television ratings but UNC, Duke and Virginia have overshadowed NC State for the most part. And Raleigh is a one of the top cities to live in the US. NC State may have opportunities once Roy and Coach K leave in the next 5 years but I don't see those programs struggling too long with that transition it will be just more difficult to keep up that winning pace.

Louisville needs a bigger name in my opinion. Louisville transitioned easily with Pitino taking over for Crum. But I don't think a big time coach wants the job just yet.

Read this not sure where that Penny does not have a college degree. Is this a requirement to be a coach at a college or university or does it vary from school to school?

Well maybe Louisville lures away Cal if it's so prestigious? Personally i hope Louisville never wins another game, no love here, i hate them with a passion.

Not so long ago Pitino and Louisville was stomping Kentucky year in and year out while Louisville fans rubbed it in our face, i wish them nothing but the worse, doesn't hurt UK's bottomlin at all...

Outside Gillispie's two years this really never happened.
