Do any of you see a scenario where the athletes get together and demand a coach be fired or a new AD be hired or a professor be fired by refusing to play, thereby costing the university millions of dollars? If a college president can be forced out where does it stop?Comment

The football players in this case had some backing from the student body and some faculty. I also think the reason for the strike would would matter. For example, racism is nigh universally rejected by American's and when you wrap yourself in that cause it is going to be tough to find very many voices who want to weigh in with any sort of skepticism or push back for fear of being labeled a racist.
I will say that if full scholarship football players across the country were willing to sacrifice a season and got together for a strike to demand compensation for play, I think the NCAA and by extension Universities would fold.Last edited by Spiritof96; 11-11-2015, 11:21 AM.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... The problem with pay for play is that the universities will have to give money to all the players for all the sports, including the ones that are already a financial drain on the schools. If that happens, the fans of the football and the men;s basketball teams will be paying higher ticket prices to support the swim, lacrosse, and tiddly wink teams.Comment

Back to the Missouri issue, I doubt the football players would have been as united, if the coaching staff hadn't joined them. I also doubt the Missouri President and Chancelor (?) would have been fired, if there wasn't million dollar payout hanging in the balance if the Missouri team failed to play their next football game.Comment

It's universally rejected by some. By others not so much.
I doubt if you spoke to many blacks they would agree that racism should be universally rejected. The problem--and I can only speak for me personally--is when racism becomes a reason for any of life's problems. The same could go for women, or really any minority: if you begin to feel like all your issues are due to sexism or some other kind of -ism, then IMO that should be universally rejected.
But I have racists in my family right now. In 2015. I know they're racist because they've told me they are. I've heard them say things. I refuse to reject that racism is a thing when I actually see it happening.Comment

You don't think that blacks agree that racism should be rejected and shouted down? They want to keep it around for some reason?Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... Not just a university but individual people's lives.
These kinds of accusations shouldn't be toyed with. God knows that some of the equality movements we've seen in the past are necessary, but this one seems to undermine those. This feels almost violently trivial.Comment
