Sorry to bring back a bigger number. Cumberland high school didn't produce that many good athletes that went to big programs like UK. So I thought I would bring this one in that went to UK back in the 1950's. This is Ron Cain. He played at UK from 1956 to 1959 and was a very good player. He was drafted by Denver and I always heard he was their final cut in 1960. As far as I know Cain never tried to play in the pros again after that. He went on to become a very good high school coach. He won a number of state championships at Seneca. He later coached at Cumberland in the 1980's. He was Maggard's coach when they got to the Class A state finals. Cain passed away quite a few years ago.
Didn't Ron have quite a bit of success as the HC at Somerset as well? It seems I remember the Briar Jumpers giving my beloved Hounds fits when a Cain coached there.
I look at these pictures and remember them. Some of the away games I made the road trip. But jeeeeez............can't be 5 or 6 years ago. Where has time gone???

I believe he did. His brother also coached at Somerset and had quite a bit of success too. IIRC, his name was John.
He was runner up for Mr. Football in Ohio, I think to Charles Woodson, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy. He was a quarterback during his first year at UK.
Against Tennessee in 1997 he was playing with a useless injured arm and he still managed to sack Peyton Manning.
Those who say Hal Mumme only succeeded because he had Tim Couch generally don't have an answer for why Mumme took UK to a 4-4 SEC record and bowl game in 1999 with Dusty Bonner.
Check out how all the men in the stands are dressed.
I believe this is a handoff to Rodger Bird in the 1965 game against Tennessee. If UK, which was ranked in the Top 10 earlier that season, had won, they'd have gone to a bowl game. UK had been given an invitation to the Gator Bowl, but turned it down, confident they'd get a bid to a more prestigious bowl game. Days later, starting QB Rick Norton's leg was broken vs. Houston, in the Astrodome. UK went from 6-2 (losses only at Auburn and at LSU) to 6-4 and did not receive another bowl invitation.
