We used ro rent all these horror vhs tapes back in the day, and we would rent a ton. The criteria was the jacket had to look good. Needless to say some duds were rented such as Shriek of the Mutilated, Creature, and Death Warmed Up. However, we discovered some gems that are horror classics such as Re-Animator, From Beyond, Phantasm 1&2, and Return of the Living Dead. Little trivia here. Return of the Living Dead was set in Louisville. I don't believe it was filmed here though. You didn't know it was Louisville either until the end when The President gave the order to nuke Louisville.

Triangle.
Thanks to Cataonic for recommending this. It's a movie I started a couple of years ago but didn't finish for some reason. But I'm glad I watched it; it's sort of a mash-up of Primer and Timecrimes (though I didn't care for Timecrimes because of the odd, quasi-comic tone of the movie). Triangle, like Primer, creates tension early on in the ominous, pulsing soundtrack, and the way the movie is chopped up to create this unsettling dread in the viewer.
To reveal too much about this would be a shame, but if you like headtrippy stuff then this is a great choice. Highly recommended.

A lot, actually. I get why it isn't for everyone, but I thought it was spooky as hell. As I watched I tried to keep the folktale framework in mind, and I think it works really well that way. Plus my wife and I got a kick out of the absurdity of more than a couple moments.

Harlan County USA is one of the best documentaries ever made.
They had some pretty colossal strikes in my hometown. At one point strikers locked themselves in the building that's now the Stearns Museum, and authorities threw in Molotov ****************tails to smoke them out. One person was killed IIRC.Comment

I dipped in to the new season of Black Mirror last night.
The episode I watched is "San Junipero," which is getting some buzz as the best of the new crop. It's pretty spectacular. No spoilers because to say anything would do a disservice to how inventive it is, but I'm interested in how long it takes people to figure out what's going on. It took me probably 45 minutes, but even when you know it doesn't ruin the episode. Highly interesting and opens up so many moral and ethical questions.
Top notch television unlike anything else that's out there.Comment

Independence Day: Resurgence is not worth another word but I give it one. Horrible
Risen: Not everyone's cup of tea because of the subject matter but I honestly liked it. Joseph Fiennes is convincing and ruthless. Ending was hokey, but, I was wrapped up in it.

It won an Academy Award for best documentary in 1976,IIRC. The friend of mine I mentioned came into school the day after the awards saying his mother had won an Academy award. I had no idea what he was talking about and thought he just fooling around. His mother didn't actually win it but still something to brag about I guess. It is a really good documentary with a real true to life bad ending. Back when all that was happening my dad said it would take someone getting killed before they would end that strike. I watched the first episode, "Nosedive," last night.
This one's a little different. Like all of Black Mirror it's extremely well-made, but it's a bit more predictable. Its message, too, is a little strange and I had some problems with how everything ends up--especially the unsettling last scene. Not as good an episode on the whole but it's definitely a brutal takedown of the Facebook and smartphone culture.Comment
