Chris Pine was good but Ben Foster was superb. The cinematography was outstanding as was the soundtrack. This movie's action was all in the third act. What came before it was a good fleshing out of the characters. You felt for the brothers. There is a scene where Bridges' partner, an Indian, describes perfectly what this movie is about. You know it when you see it. This was almost the perfect movie and is sure to garner Oscar nods for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Bridges. Foster probably deserves the nod too. Highly recommended. See this movie.
Glad you enjoyed this as much as I did. Just gave it a rewatch last night.

Doctor Strange - A typical Marvel superhero movie by way of "Inception." A lot of fun and Cumberbatch was fantastic as the titular Strange. Not gonna win any awards, but a fun spin on the tired superhero genre and expands the Marvel generation in a good way. 3/4

How is it that Ben Foster is one of the best actors in Hollywood but can never land a leading role? Is that by choice or is he just one of those perpetually disrespected guys?

Short arc, but yeah, he was good in that. Everybody was.

Loved him in "Six Feet Under," even though the writers turned his character into a ridiculous doofus.

As far as movies, he was the bright spot in "Alpha Dog," "3:10 To Yuma," "The Messenger," "Rampart," "Lone Survivor," and "Hell Or High Water."

              Arrival.

A heavy, slow-moving tour de force about memory and first contact. Amy Adams smiles not once in this (there's a reason for that, and its reveal is shocking) but she is very good as a linguist brought in to try and decode an alien's strange semaphores. Denis Villeneuve, who's probably my favorite filmmaker at this point, goes for heavy realism as the world begins to unfray after the obelisk-like alien ships (2001 references are heavy) arrive. This movie is pretty much the opposite of Independence Day: if you're looking for explosions and screaming masses and buildings crushed to powder, this isn't the film. What it is is a weighty, philosophical movie that's thick with ideas and that owes more to Terrence Malick than Michael Bay.

I highly recommend this, but beware--it's a complicated movie that isn't for everyone.

This sounds perfect. Sort of what I was hoping for out of Prometheus. I can't wait.

Looking forward to seeing "Arrival" this week. Love cerebral science fiction.

Plus Denis Villeneuve is one of the best working filmmakers today.

And I actually really enjoyed "Prometheus" on a strict entertainment level. I just pretended like the plot wasn't happening and I had a good time. Though flawed, I thought it was an underrated movie.

                      Hacksaw Ridge.

Brutal and hopeful at the same time. Spiritual
If you got squeamish at Saving Private Ryan, then avoid at all costs. Intense and bloody war scenes like I've never seen before.

Andrew Garfield was really good. And if you have watched any Desmond Doss interviews, Garfield pretty much nails the role.
Vince Vaughn doesn't fit as the drill Sgt but minor flaw.

Corny at times but when I watched interviews and read stories, I see where this comes from. Doss was an amazing and brave spiritual being.

Not ashamed to say I got a little emotional watching.

Looking forward to seeing this. Mel Gibson, for all his flaws as a human being, is a reliable filmmaker.

I'm thinking of subscribing to FilmStruck. There's a lot in the Criterion Collection I haven't seen, and the movie selections on Netflix and Prime are pretty crappy for the most part.

I've seen a bunch of stuff lately, all of which I've enjoyed to varying degrees.

                            *Arrival
*Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them

Arrival - Highly cerebral sci-fi frown-fest. But everything that Will said about it is true. Denis Villeneuve is one of our finest working directors, and the movie is a minor masterpiece. Just don't go see it if you're feeling sleepy. It's slow, methodical, thoughtful. But it's also great.
