There's nothing intriguing at all about her IMO. She's a nothing who stares blankly into the camera for long stretches of the movie.

I thought Rey's character was much better. Just a much better movie all the way around and there was more for the actress who played Rey to work with.

The guy that plays the love interest--Cassabian or whatever?--was particularly weak. What was his deal? Why should we have cared about him? It was all murky and uninteresting.

There was much more of a dynamic and backstory with the Asian guys they find in that market thing. Those guys were awesome and were the only two characters in the movie that I felt pity about when they

I agree about the Asian guys. I would add K-2SO in there as well. Aside from Vader in all his badassery, those three characters were the best.

It is clear that Vader suspects the plans were beamed to the ship and is involved in an interdiction that involves political risk to him.

the point is that this conversation doesn't make much sense given this new history.

It's obvious to me then that she was lying. And Vader knew it. What else was she supposed to say? She wasn't going to come clean. For not having any backstory to go on, I thought Gareth Edwards did a fine job in setting up A New Hope. I guess the bigger question would be how C-3PO and R2D2 wound up on the shuttle with Leia?

I think the whole mythology is ridiculous. It's a movie about aliens and humans fighting in space.

I agree with Will - if i HAVE to watch a Star Wars movie, I just want people getting chopped up with light sabers. The less dialogue and "story," the better.

Star Wars IS a movie series intended for eight years -- the fact that adults enjoy it equally is a tribute to its craft (when done well, as the original trilogy was).

The whole discussion of backstories and canon is interesting in theory. I think people engage in it because it opens up all these other vehicles. You can get into the novels, the spin-offs, the intricacies of the movies, the cartoons, etc.

I get that. And it's the same reason you have these epic battles about Marvel characters.

But it can be a little tedious and weird. I'd say fanboys find our discussions about Malik Monk's points per game and whether Mychal Mulder should play just as weird.

My wife told me last night that the fact that I watch high school basketball is strange. Everybody has their own thing they get into in aggressive, obsessive ways.

LOL. I can sense the sarcasm dripping through this post. You really didn't know their names?

At least we get some semblance of a back story with Erso. There's tangible reasoning why she's brooding. She's not thrown into the story recklessly. She's a necessary component for the Rebellion.

Rey, on the other hand, just stumbles into the universe and we're asked to buy it because it's Star Wars. She's had no training and she goes toe to toe with Kylo Ren. She flies the Millenium Falcon without any issues, out maneuvering what should have been a well trained Trooper. It's all wrapped up very nicely. I like Rey, but in this particular comparison, Erso is far more interesting and believable IMO.

I'm sure Rey will be more developed moving forward.

My personal top 10 of 2016.

01 | Captain America: Civil War
                    02 | Zootopia
                    03 | Kubo & the Two Strings
04 | Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
                    05 | Arrival
                    06 | Moana
                    07 | 10 Cloverfield Lane
                    08 | Fences
                    09 | Dr. Strange
10 | Manchester by the Sea

Still got a ton to see in the next couple of months. Saw Sing Street last night, and I know it's made its way into a lot of lists. It was really good.

Late inclusions are Manchester by the Sea and Fences. Manchester was a tough watch, but really great performances and I loved how the ending wasn't compromised.

Fences is a really bizarre film that works itself out just like the play does, I'm assuming. Denzel directed this one, and I find it amazing it's essentially a bottle movie where 99% of everything that transpires is from the dialogue. The first 20 minutes are a bit jarring to the senses if you don't know what you're getting yourself in to. I wouldn't watch either of these again, but I can't deny the quality.

Five out of my top ten are basically Disney films; but hey, they are responsible for half (HALF!) of the year's box office earnings, and for good reason. They put out a lot of really great stuff this year.

Saw Rogue yesterday. I was really antsy the 1st half. Plus the fact that everything is going backwards is confusing to me. Did I miss one of the sequels? The last movie I saw was the young girl (can't remember her character's name) went to find Luke Skywalker and the last scene he is standing on a rock ledge, noticeably older in a black cape. No sign of Luke in this one unless I missed it

They're jumping back and forth in time rather than going backwards.

Rogue One is a direct prequel of sorts to the very first Star Wars film that was released in 1977, A New Hope. The reason that there's no Luke Skylwalker is because Skywalker would still be on Tatooine with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.

The movie you're talking about with Luke Skywalker is The Force Awakens, which takes place after the original Star Wars trology. The sequel to that movie will be released in December 2017.

Saw The Jungle Book last night on Netflix. I can't remember much of the original story to go off of, but I really enjoyed this. It's worth a watch for the impressive cgi alone. It's the best I have ever seen. Give it a watch.

                            My top 10 of 2016:

                            01] Hell Or High Water
                            02] Finding Dory
                            03] The Edge Of Seventeen
                            04] Don't Breathe
                            05] La La Land
                            06] Hacksaw Ridge
                            07] Arrival
                            08] Moonlight
                            09] Deadpool
                            10] Everybody Wants Some

Pretty vanilla year for movies, IMO. Still need to see Silence and Fences. The more I think about Manchester By The Sea, the more I dislike it.
