This one got absolutely ravaged by the critics and audience scores alike, so I figured it would be hideously awful.
I, for one, am tired of Will Smith chasing awards in mediocre Oscar bait. Here's hoping he goes back to the big, stupid summer blockbusters where he belongs.Comment

I didn't dislike The Force Awakens it's just that I liked the new things so much that I was really disappointed with the degree of rehashed material. I think the script for TFA is much better than R1 from a dialogue perspective, but both movies were similar in that I found the first half that was new more interesting than the second.Comment

Can someone who is more into the Star Wars lore than I am chime in with a response? I had a buddy tell me he thought the ending was an insult to the Darth Vader character, in that he was made to look weak in how.....SPOILERS..........................he lets the Death Star data get passed on down the row. I don't know, it feels like hyperbolic silliness; I thought it was an awesome display of his character (especially how he essentially cuts one dude in half) but my buddy is a huge SW fan and I really don't know.Comment

i think Rey is the more charismatic character and has the benefit of a more interesting future.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... Star Wars: Rogue One.
For the first hour I kept thinking, This is worse than Phantom Menace. All the dealings between the Empire and the rebels were uninteresting; every time the Empire henchmen came on-screen I didn't understand what they were talking about. The characters with the exception of the two Asian guys (a lot of samurai allusions here) were pretty lame. The male and female leads were particularly empty vessels. But then the last battle starts, and it's probably the best thing visually that's ever happened in a Star Wars movie.
And then. THEN. That awesome last five minutes. This is one of the few movies I've seen that is completely redeemed by the ending. That thing is so clever and awesome that it saves the whole thing. It is really worth seeing the entire movie for and whoever came up with it needs a medal.
Still, this isn't nearly as good on the whole as The Force Awakens and is pretty boring for a solid hour. I saw it at the new Xscape theater on their Xtreme screen, which is as tall as a minor skyscraper. Highly recommended that you see it that way if you haven't watched it yet. The space battle is something to look at.Comment

By end, you don't mean the mcguffin chasing on the planet, but the end end?
Are you familiar enough with A New Hope to catch how the end changes that story's starting point? Does that bother you?Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... It also makes your assessment of the end of the movie more understandable. Dramatically speaking the first two scripts hold their own against any general audience script ever done.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... Saw Rogue One tonight. I have the same thoughts about it as Will, though I thought the movies first hour was pretty well done. It set up a lot of A New Hope. The last hour? Totally awesome. The Star Wars nerd in me was just giddy with excitement. I liked the slow burn with the Vader angle. It made his last scene all the more memorable. And man did he really tear it up. I could watch that scene a thousand times and not ever get bored. This was the Vader we all knew but never got to see. Just think if we had got THAT Vader in episodes 4,5, and 6. The last battle on Scarif was beautifully done. To see a Star Wars battle in a tropical setting was breathtaking. I have read a lot of people were turned off by the CGI of certain characters but I loved it. K-2SO was an awesome addition. He's probably the best CGI I have ever seen and his whole screen time is memorable. The best Star Wars movie was Empire. Rogue One is #2 for me in the series. It is a darker, more action packed Star Wars than any other. It is essentially a war movie. There were plenty of "Oh!", and "Wow!" moments for me in this movie. I can't wait to see this again. This is a highly recommended movie for Star Wars nerds.Last edited by Blue Heaven; 12-24-2016, 01:50 AM.Isaiah 5:20Comment

It is interesting that we are seemingly opposite with regard to what we find interesting and boring. There is no doubt that the visuals are stunning in the last act; but the plot at that point really annoyed me.

You're speaking my language. Raiders was great. Temple of Doom was good. The Last Crusade was outstanding. I have the boxed set. When my Daughter was very young, I got her hooked on all my faves I grew up with. She is fifteen now, and she still asks if we can "Watch the one where the guy's heart gets pulled out of his chest." It always brings a tear to my eye.Isaiah 5:20Comment

I don't think it changes it one bit because we didn't know what happened directly before it, aside from the opening crawler that opens A New Hope. I thought it was a clever lead up. If you mean A New Hope presents us with a different Vader? I can give you that. That is why I said in my review what if we had got THAT Vader in 4,5, and 6.
The dialogue between Vader and Liea she claims that she is on a diplomatic mission using her status as a senator as a cover for her secret mission rather than being openly involved with the rebellion in combat zones.
It is clear that Vader suspects the plans were beamed to the ship and is involved in an interdiction that involves political risk to him.
the point is that this conversation doesn't make much sense given this new history.

It was definitely true of the original series. Lucas literally said he wanted to make movies for 8-year-olds.
I thought The Force Awakens was much better on the whole because it gave itself over to that almost childlike whimsy.
This movie is too heavy for the first hour. There's stuff that happens that I just don't care about. Patton Oswalt has a great bit about those prequels and why they sucked. He says that Lucas just stripped out all the awesome stuff. I don't want to see generic characters talking about about stuff I don't understand nor care about. Give me Vader chopping up people with his light saber and x-wing fighters blowing up. That's why people like Star Wars and it's the only time Rogue One really works.Last edited by Joneslab; 12-24-2016, 10:07 AM.Comment
