Get on it Catsrock! Opening season at Peabody in Ohio County was insane. I was there for fishing, but that was the most hunters I have ever seen there. Supposedly, the Ohio/Muhlenberg has some of the best turkey hunting in the state. I read just yesterday that Muhlenberg has checked in the most turkeys so far this season.

Muhlenburg, Ohio and Logan regularly lead the state and are doing so again this year. I get to hunt some in Hardin Co. which along with Grayson and Hart are also strong. Unfortunately I'm likely going to lose my hunting lease after this season as an outfitter has offered more than we can afford for the lease. The landscape for hunting is really changing with all the leasing and subleasing going on. Wish I had about 300-400 acres of my own.

Hadn't had a chance to hunt this season until last Monday. After a few hours I was finally able to work a good bird, but then...I shot right over his head. Looked up too soon in anticipation of the death flop and pulled up my gun just enough to miss. I've replayed that shot a hundred times in my head.

Getting back in the woods tomorrow morning, and Saturday if need be.

I have my bow out this year for turkey season. No blind. Just me and my bow sitting in the middle of some cedar trees. I had two birds at 25 yards but both had under a five inch beard and I want something bigger. Maybe this weekend.

It's happened to all of us. Anyone who has hunted much anyway.

Wow, there's a challenge. Since I like eating them I better stick to my 12 gauge. 😊

Ha you are certainly correct about the challenge. I am not crazy about the meat, but I make sure it never goes to waste. I hunt and fish for the sport. I couldn't tell you the last time I caught a fish I didn't release. Probably the last bass I got mounted which I think was 12 years ago. I hunt for the sport and trophy. If I don't plan on hanging it up on the wall I don't kill it. Some people disagree with that and I have been told a number of times I shouldn't hunt if I don't eat it, but I say as long as I don't waste the meat they need to mind their business.

Three mornings in and still no luck. No action to speak of on the second day; yesterday we got a little back-and-forth going with a couple toms, but when we located them they were way out in an open field, surrounded by seven hens. Only chance we had was to wait a while for the hens to peel off, but I didn't have that kind of time. Once the rain passes I'll be back at it later in the week.

Hunted last Saturday with no luck. Got on a tom that I thought was gonna pay off, but after an 1.5 hour back-and-forth, he circled wide and went completely silent.

                    BUT...

Got back out there this morning and heard him gobbling on the roost. Got above him and, a couple of silent moments aside, was able to keep him talkin' for an hour or so. Thought once that he was on his way in, but I think he got with a hen. Got up to follow him, thinking I'd set up and wait her out, and about halfway through my move he started gobbling again - and this time he was pretty darn close. Didn't take long for him to answer every call, and before long it was clear that he was committed and heading my way.

Finally, FINALLY saw his head appear over the edge of the knob. He pop strutted once, stretched his neck for a look, and I hammered him.

Didn't weight him, but I'm guessing he was around 20lbs. They're on the light side this time of year anyway, so I wasn't really concerned about weight in the first place. Had an 11.5" beard and an absolute dagger spur (other one was broken off) which I'll measure later and report to you guys after work. Almost half his fan feathers were missing, too. He was an old bird - four years, maybe five - and looked to have been in more than few scraps. All in all, couldn't be happier with the way the late spring hunts have gone.

Good luck to anyone else who's still hunting. And in case anyone's wondering, I was hunting in VA. Got another week left, so I might get back out there if I can slip away from the office one more time.

Ignore 'em. Hunt because you like it, and if they still won't shut up, educate them on the ecological benefits of hunting.

Good deal Downes. That's what's great about turkey hunting. Every hunt has its own story. Never the same experience twice. Looks like spring harvest in Ky wound up over 31,000 in the fridge. Good solid number. I contributed 1 of those and stayed with it till closing day but never filled the 2nd tag. Normally get 2 but sometimes birds are smarter than me!

Hit a private farm pond in Badstown this morning after work and my buddy and I killed it. Probably got 70 gills in the cooler. They were on the nest. There was a few times where every cast for minutes we were catching fish. We probably threw back as many as we caught. It was a great day.

Sounds fun. I haven't fished for bluegill since I was a kid.

I like bass fishing more than anything, but these last 6-7 years I have enjoyed filling the freezer with bluegills. They taste fantastic. It's a lot of work cleaning them but it is worth it, imo. You know, I was at Meijer last year and they sold bluegill fillets for $11 a lb.. says all you need to know right there.

My friends and I had a camp on an old mine 3 miles outside of Beaver Dam. One of the lakes was 35 acres. We built a cabin and a 40' pier out into the lake. It was awesome. We found out early that an electric filet knife, or two, were well worth the expense. We could knock out 100 gills in an hour. One guy with the knife and another guy trimming out the ribs.
