    Hunting/Fishing

Does anyone else out there hunt or fish? I probably do too much of both considering I have a part time job I work one or two days a week to support my habits. I hunt deer and turkey for the most part but occasionaly throw in dove, coyote, duck, goose, and squirrel. I fish for just about everything and got into fly fishing a few years back. Now it is an obsession for me. I had a moment a few weeks ago when I realized it. I started fishing when I was 3 years old with my aunt at the family farm. A few weeks back I was researching the life cycle of different insects trout eat so I could more effectively tie my own flies to target the trout with. I realized how far I have come with my hobbies that quite a few times have kept me out of trouble and provide some personal therapy and much needed alone time. I sent her a text explaining my thought process and thanked her. If you dont hunt or fish, what other hobbies do you guys and gals have?

LOVE to fish! Mostly go for bass, bluegill, and crappie. I plan on cleaning and restringing my rods and reels this weekend. Too me, there's nothing like a Kalins grub on a jig head for crappie or crickets for the bluegill. Man that's some good eating! As far as bass go, I love to plastic worm fish but will throw the occasional crankbait or small spinner. When summer time rolls in I like to wade the creeks and streams. A 6 ft. light to medium graphite rod, a spinning reel and some crawdad imitations, grubs and in line spinners are all I use. I'm looking forward to spring break. The Wife and Daughter will be gone for a few days and I will either be fishing an awesome private lake for gills and crappies or hitting Peabody for some big gills. That private lake has been the best fishing I have ever done. That lake has everything, even some pike. Few years back I got 2 largemouth on a tequila sunrise power worm within 10 minutes and both were over 6 lbs. They have been the biggest bucketmouths I have caught. That same lake last March 31st, my buddy and I were on my 10 ft 2 man Sportsman 111 and caught about 80 really nice crappie. One I caught was about 16 inches and the rest were all 11 inches +. Two years ago on our annual Peabody trip with 7 of my friends, we caught so many BIG bluegill that we got tired of cleaning/frying/eating. Those are the days I live for. It's too bad my family don't enjoy it as much as I. They are missing out on some geat memories. I will try to grab some pics from my phone and upload them.

BINGO and Amen to that! In a way, it's what keeps me sane. I could catch nothing and have a ball. None of my friends I grew up with love the outdoors. I'm fortunate I work with a great bunch of guys who love what I love. I feel God put them in my path for just that reason.

I neither hunt nor fish. My hobbies are listening to my favorite music, playing chess and playing golf (mostly golf when it's in season).

Love to fish. I don't get do a lot of it up here in Chicago, but there is a lake that for a while I use go to outside of the city and would find a school of decent sized crappies on occasion. I like fishing mostly for big cats. Biggest I've ever caught was a 30lb flathead. I've caught a lot of channels and pretty blues over the years when I was down in KY. My favorite baits to use to catch them are jumbo leeches, small goldfish, big minnows, catalpa worms, and handmade stink baits. I've caught some big walleyes over the years also. They put up a good fight. I could go fishing everyday for the rest of my life. As I said I just love it

I'm surprised at how few people in my generation play chess. I am 27 and have a board at work. I always try to get my co-workers to play but no one knows how. I enjoy playing it by myself during down time.

I bet you'd love to get a hook in one like this, huh?

I have started to fish in recent years. I dont often get to do it but have been on a float down the New River for the last couple of years. Lots of fun and lots of small mouth. I went deer hunting for the first time in my life this last fall. Saw a couple of deer but never got a shot off. The best part of both are the nights next to the campfire drinking a little bourbon with my friends.

It's been probably 28 years or so since I've done either. I used to hunt rabbits and squirrels. Had no interest in deer or fowl hunting. If I had a boat, I'd probably resume fishing again.

Surveying the boundary of Bernheim Forest 30 years ago afforded the opportunity to see parts of the forest not open to the public and literally dozens of deer at a time, as well as my first bald eagle sighting. I'd rather hit the woods with a camera in that regard and have some good bird photos from Bernheim, but currently no deer.

Not the biggest in the lake, but it's the biggest I've caught:

Our local lake, via the super relaxing Pack Canoe. This involved a lot of casting and not much catching, but was preceded by a breakfast sandwich and coffee enjoyed that morning while the fog was still lifting. It does not take too much success to have fun on the lake!

Surveyor, a man of your wisdom and good tastes might do well to consider a canoe, if there are areas locally where you could enjoy it. Takes up little space, requires no fuel, and most of all is fun!

I still get out to a local pond at my gun club a couple of times a year to flyfish. My hunting days are behind me. Balance issues related to my hearing loss. I do hunt extensively with my Canon.....

I've considered a canoe. The wife would like a two person kayak to travel some of the local rivers and creeks on weekends. Working toward an amenable compromise. Growing up I had a Sears gamefisher with a 9 horse Evinrude that I'd fish from all by myself down at Rough River. Crickets and minnows in sloughs were my favorite.

Canoes are wonderful things. I word of warning. Get used to it before taking fishng gear, cameras, anything you don't want getting wet. Tipping a canoe is a right of passage... ;-)
