Anyone listen to the Meat Eater podcast? It's a guy named Steve Rinella. Pretty good stuff.

I am leaving Friday morning for a trip to Colorado for an elk hunt. I am headed to Winter Park, about two hours NW of Denver, where a friend lives. We are planning on camping the majority of the time which means I will miss a lot of action around here, but I will also lose a little weight which is never a bad thing!👍 2Comment

I actually haven't watched any of his videos; only podcasts. I'll check them out. The first episode I listened to was focused on hunting dogs, which I found particularly interesting. Rinella claims early on that guys who hunt with dogs are more into the dogs than they are hunting. I haven't done much hunting with dogs, but I can definitely see how that might be true.Comment

Might be getting an AR this weekend. It will be my first "assault weapon". God, I hate that phrase. Anywho, I find myself pretty excited. Can't wait to recover enough so I can do some shooting, be it with an AR or not.Isaiah 5:20Comment

The trip was amazing. It was the most grueling, exhausting, mentally and physically draining trip I could have imagined. We saw everything but bull elk, though. It was a successful trip and I hope to do it again sometime. We hunted sun up to sun down six days in a row putting in an average of seven miles a day. There isn't much like being out in that type of country.👍 1Comment

I don't hunt but I am a bit jealous. The scenery alone would have been worth a trip like that for me.

I know this isn't what you are saying, but I have found that as each year passes I get criticized more and more for hunting. It is one of those situations where a few bad people in the group lead to opinions being spread towards everyone. I would argue that well over 90% of the hunters in this country do things the right way. They treat the animals and land with respect, have little to no waste, and genuinely care about the cause they are supporting. There's nothing more I love than getting outside and enjoying the land or water, fishing or hunting or not.
For those who don't know the name Fred Bear, look him up. He was the pioneer of bow hunting and the reason it is what it is today. I have a few of his quotes that stick close to me, but the one I have framed in my house is:
"I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life, if I can, with regret as well as joy and with the sure knowledge that nature's way of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow."Comment

Well said and I agree 100%. I would love to be able to deer hunt. I like to eat venison and do any chance I get.Isaiah 5:20Comment
