You were deer hunting but killed a turkey?

Yep. There's a part of the year, or was, when the seasons for both overlap. I called telechek to register the kill and fill out my tag.

I thought that might have been the case. Was it in the fall? I live right at the KY/VA/TN tri-state area and recall (I think) a period in the fall when you can hunt both.

Yessir, it was. In October there's a three week window for crossbow hunting deer. Just so happened that turkey was in season too. The weather was awful. Really warm and so humid there was fog everywhere. I was literally drenched by the time I got back to camp.

As for bow hunting without a blind, check out the linked video. The author of the article is a family friend and, needless to say, I'm envious of him.
We knew turkeys were in the area, so we spent about an hour doing some aggressive blind-calling. This gobbler snuck into the spread without making a sound and blew up into full strut between Michelle and the decoys. That put him at about 4 yards away. After that … well, you’ll just have to watch the video.

I think it is state wide, but I know in Jefferson county (zone 1) if it is archery season for deer it is archery season for Turkey.

I have never put in for it here but am going to Colorado in September to elk hunt.

Nice. I'd love to hunt in that territory. Hoping to have a chance to elk hunt in Kentucky this year, though. Dad guides hunts in our area for out-of-state folks. We've seen some bulls that could lean their heads back and scratch their rumps with their antlers. To say they've thrived in Eastern Kentucky would be an understatement.

^ I tell people pretty often that right now is the Good Ole Days for outdoor activities in Kentucky. I need to quite being lazy, and get my rear out on Dewey in the mornings to try and catch some panfish. It's not Kentucky Lake, but the 12-14" slabs are not uncommon there. Cave Run Lake has been reported very good in the last 2 years as well.

My wife and I just bought a house, and there's a good sized creek down the hill on the edge of our property. Turns out, our property sits right below the spot where they stock trout. I think this'll be the year I finally take up fly fishing.

I play chess. Started a thread about it on the old board and tried to get some members to play, but never got a bite. Do you guys have Chess.com accounts?

I don't. I mostly play during the months the weather is too bad for outside activities. It's been at least eight years, if not longer, since I'v played another person. During that time span, I've been playing computer personalities.

Anyone caught any nice panfish lately? The Farmers Almanac has great fishing for the next few days. Went to a small lake in Bardstown yesterday, but it was rather windy. I HATE bobber fishing in the wind! By Wednesday the wind is gonna die a bit. That little lake is a wax worm lake and has some nice redear. Went to Peabody 2 weekends ago. Took 2 tubes of crickets and caught bass all weekend long but only a few bluegill. The pans should be circling the nest soon. I WILL get a basket full. It's my mission this time of year. I feel the late winter barrage we had set things back a tad. Mid May or so should see full on action. BRING IT!!!

^ I hear you on the wind. I drove over to Dewey Lake last week to scout the water conditions, and it was very windy. I have an anchor set-up for the Pack canoe, but so far I've been wimping out. It's so difficult to do anything in a canoe when the wind is going crazy. Dewey's doing very well right now with panfish, and kyafield says there is some white bass action going on as well. I need to get out on the wabe and do so soon!
