^ That had been my impression, too, regarding canoes made of the same/similar material. They're quite resistant to scratches, but once there is a hole then you are sorta finished.

You guys sure know how to give a feller some hope, lol! After MUCH research I've decided to go the plastic welding route. I'm off Spring Break so I'll tackle it then and let you all know how it went.

^ I need to quit being lazy, and do some work on my Royalex. It's got some scratches that need to be filled now whilst they are still superficial.

That's my problem! Next thing I know, Spring is here and I haven't fixed the boat. Man, 3rd shift is a love/hate relationship. You have time to do whatever you want or need but it makes it easy to put things off.

Can this be our guns thread, too?

I need your all's help: talk me out of a Ruger Mini-14. A local shop has a new one with the wood stock and I have to say it's very well balanced. All of my rifles have scopes and are sort of heavy, and I don't have anything with open sights to plink with and just have fun.

The Ruger has advantages: 1 in 9" rate of twist, uses box magazines, has an aperture sight already, 2 stage trigger (it's not horribly heavy), is chambered for 5.56mm NATO and it just feels good.

The big disadvantage is the price. At $729, it's sort of pricey for a "just for fun" gun. I think they used to be closer to $500, and at that price I'd grab it and growl. I think I'd end up trying to put better sights on it, bedding the action, and having somebody work over the trigger...so even more expense. But man do I think it would be nice for plinking and late evening ridge walks.

Do any of you have experience with them? Supposedly they're more accurate now than they used to be. I already own some tack-drivers so as long as it doesn't shoot "patterns" and I can hit reasonably sized targets like cans, etc...I'd be fine.

Mini 14 is a great gun. Blue or Stainless. Great deal if its stainless. good deal if not.
They have been making them for 40 years for a reason....

Absolutely nothing more fun than calling in a gobbler (male turkey) in spring! 10 days till season and I cannot wait!

Surveyor, a man of your wisdom and good tastes might do well to consider a canoe, if there are areas locally where you could enjoy it. Takes up little space, requires no fuel, and most of all is fun!
                    That is gorgeous.

Instead of forgetting about the gun, you might want to consider checking out Gunbroker, Guns America and the next gun show at Heritage Hall in Lexington. Sometimes you can find someone needing to sell badly and pick up a bargain.

Agreed. Turkey season is so much different than deer season. You actually talk to the turkeys and it is a cool experience. Some people tell me I am crazy, but I am bow hunting them this year without a blind. I know the challenge will be unreal, but I am in it for a challenge and for the sport. I enjoy the hunt and enjoy learning things just as much as getting an animal on the ground.

For health reasons I no longer hunt. I can't imagine ANYTHING more exciting than heading out to a deer stand on opening morning.

Wow that would be a major challenge! I don't like to be limited by a blind either--never use one. But to bow hunt without one would be tough. I'd probably have as much luck throwing a rock at them. But good luck and have fun! Hope the rain moves out by then.

I was deer hunting in Breck County about 5 years ago with a crossbow. Low and behold a big 'ol Tom walked directly under my stand and then worked his way in front of me. I literally pinned that big fella to the ground. Super exciting!!! Breast was awesome with some Cajun seasoning. Best of luck team!!

I'd take turkey hunting over deer hunting any day of the week. Much more action, much more of an honest-to-goodness hunt. Deer hunting is more about preparation (and possessing the willpower to wake up super early and sit still and silent in the cold and the dark). I've never turkey hunted with a blind. No reason why you shouldn't have success. Good luck, and post pics!
