I've never really been hunting or fishing, but I've always wanted to "give it a shot." Starting from the level of knowing absolutely nothing about them, it's kind of hard to get in to, but it's on my list.

I've got 3 boys and I would love to be able to do those things with them someday.

^ Then why not start now? A Zebco 33 is what I cut my teeth on. Easy to cast. Google and youtube is a good place to start or ask someone you know who does like to fish. My Dad never was the outdoors type. He didn't hunt or fish, though I did learn how to shoot because of him. I was a self taught fisherman. Some hula hoops in the backyard is a great way to practice casting. Just tie a small washer on the line and give it a go. Hunting would be a different story. A whole different level of responsibility and discipline but like with anything, practice makes perfect.

I would suggest starting with fishing... KISS principle.. Blue's suggestion about a zebco is a good starting point. A hand full of lures a few spinners, some jigs and a couple of rapalas and some power bait will serve you well... There is a ton of information available to get you started... Like everything there are a lot of big blue folks who are very willing to help a brother out...
There is something to say about the fact that Christ choose fishermen to spread his word...

Best advice you can take in this regard is to just get out there and experiment! youtube/books/internet can all be good resources for learning new techniques. But none of those teaches you more than what you learn by/on the water. Just get some night crawlers and slap on a bobber and see what happens. Fishing is fun whether you're catching or not and It's great for taking the edge off. God knows it helps keep me sane. Hope you and the kids find your way out there soon. Trout season is almost upon us! (great place to start btw)

I've been a trout fishermen as long as I can remember. But I moved into a new house with a pond in the back last year so I've been learning a ton about bass fishing lately. Since it is small I don't need anything more than my canoe to get around. I am loving it!! Caught one 5lbs on Valentines day this year! It has me seriously considering a fishing kayak that could be used both on larger lakes and the river. Anyone know much about kayaks? From what I have looked into, there seems to be umpteen billion different choices you have to make before deciding on one....

It's gonna be 77 today. Time to get the line wet for the first time this year. I've got cabin fever big time! They should be up close and sunning today. We'll see how it goes.

Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.

Nah. Went to a small lake out in Bardstown. Caught 11 bass. All small. No more than 10 inches. All caught on a Kalins bumble bee 2" grub and a 16th oz. jig. Thought about Taylorsville but bank access would be spotty at best with the flooding going on.

That won't be happening till around Spring Break and I can get the boat out. I gotta fix a hole in her first. Anyone have any tips they can give me as far as laying up some fiberglass? I have a racquetball size hole right at the transom of my little 2 man plastic boat. I don't wanna buy another boat just want to fix this one but unfortunately info on the net as far as a technique for my kind of boat is hard to find. Grrr!

Marine grade epoxy glue, sacrifice half a dozen good quality plastic plates.
Cut to fit 1 inch larger than then hole .. One piece at a time. Inner hull.
Plate / glue and repeat... as many times as you feel comfortable with... let cure a couple of days.
You can lay a couple strips of gauze between layers for strength.
be stronger than the boat bro...

They have definitely moved shallow in my small pond. Might be another week or two for larger bodies of water though. We caught a few yesterday right from the bank and you could see them schooled up in the sun.

Oh and I can't wait for the gills to get on bed either! There is a really healthy gill and shell cracker population behind the house. That or there are just a few really nice ones that are always hungry!

Easier said than done my friend. My boat is one of those 2 man plastic deals. It's 2 pieces. A top and lower part joined together. The hole is non existant from the inside of the boat. So I would have to find a way to patch the hole from the inside before I lay the glass. I suppose I could bolt or rivet a piece in place with some epoxy around the edges. But the hard part would be fashioning something to that piece in order to hold it while it's drying/being tightened up.

If this is what I'm thinking of, they're made of polyethylene and are difficult to patch and repair.
