I dug a little deeper, and these New York Yankees were a football team:

When a bid by Grange and Pyle to buy a piece of the Bears was rejected by Halas, the two formed their own league, the American Football League, in 1926, with Grange playing for the New York Yankees. The league folded after a year. The Yankees, though, joined the NFL, but in the third game of the 1927 season, Grange suffered such a severe knee injury that he never was the same dashing runner he had been.

That would be Lance Alworth, one of the most graceful football players I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

Actually, his name was Gene. He began his career with the Rams and it ended with the Steelers. Sandwiched in between was four seasons with the Colts. His time with the Colts is where I remember him from seeing as how I've been a Colt fan since 1958. I remember an interview when they asked him about his prowess as a def. lineman. Big Daddy said "I just tackle the entire backfield and peel them away and toss them aside until I find the one with the ball".

Tinkers to Evers to Chance. Cubs double play combo from many years ago. Believe the poem was written by a NY Giants fan.
