I didn't take, from the link I posted, that he can play but his father is holding him out. Perhaps I need to read it again. The last I knew UK's athletic teams had a team dr. and he made the determination of whether or not a player was able to play. As far as his dad wanting everything run through him, I don't have a problem with that. If I had a son or dau. in their late teens or early 20's in JQ's position I would be hands on as well. I don't know of too many people that age that are qualified to manage their own business affairs.

With the creation of NIL, I do have a problem with that.

If we were talking old school college athletics where players weren't paid (cough, cough) and were still considered amateurs....then I would agree. However.....they are now being paid big bucks and are more or less paid professionals. As such, the university paying them is their employer.... and employers have the right to demand work being performed in order to be paid.

Now....if a university can withhold payments due to non-performance, then I'd go back to agreeing with the statement that his parents are well within their rights to hold him out in an attempt to not damage his draft stock and status (i.e. - future contract/payday). Unfortunately, though, I don't believe that is the case (that universities can withhold payment for not playing).

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant. If UK still has a team dr. he/she should be the one determining whether or not a player can play, not coach Pope or a player's parent(s). If said dr. is saying yes he can return to playing and he is flat out refusing, which I don't think is the case, then he shouldn't be receiving pay. If he's not able to play, pay him. Concerning parent involvement, I feel young people need someone with their best interests at heart looking out for them. There are lots of unscrupulous people looking to take advantage of people.

This is exactly how it should be. If the team doctor clears them, then they should play if needed or stop getting paid.
