It isn't just about you, the same way anti-vaxxers don't get that either.
The death rate is exaggerated right now and every health expert on every news station has said so. It is going to drop dramatically as more tests are done and the correct numbers of cases are realized.

And I am not saying it's not dangerous and should be ignored. It just shouldn't have ever reached this mass hysteria state that it is now.

And when treatment is developed and testing is more prevalent, I bet you people will revisit their stances and policies.

It isn’t as though people want to carry on like this.

I don't necessarily think people who study pandemics and viruses would call canceling sporting events "hysteria."

They'd probably just call that measured caution.

Our reaction--because we are emotionally tied to the sporting event and/or the money around said event--find that obscene and an over-reaction. They wouldn't see that at all.

Now canceling an entire college semester is a different story, though I don't see much of a problem with doing online learning. Berea just shut down. That's strange.

I’m not just talking about sporting events. It’s colleges, work events, conferences, the governor of Ohio also mentioned avoiding stores and malls. That is way beyond canceling a random sporting event.

The AIDS epidemic is one of the most studied and combated in human history. There was a decades-long attempt around the world to eradicate it.

One of the most fascinating things I ever wrote for the General Assembly was for a Kentucky-born woman who had contracted HIV from her dentist. She went on to become one of the most outspoken advocates against AIDS working in the George H.W. Bush administration. She died at 33. Her name was Belinda Mason, and if you've never heard her story I suggest you read about it. Ungodly powerful.

Some of this stuff isn't entertaining. It's a bit sad tbh.

I'd like to extend an invite to some of the Public Health experts in this thread to come join us in the Political Forum.

I'm going to side with Dwight on the matter (at this point). There is no antiviral for this coronavirus, and the extent of caution is to prevent it from spreading and becoming a problem. What most "well, hmph, it's just the stupid chest cold" people don't understand is that it's not about them.

The death rate of Covid-19 is yet to be determined. As of yesterday in South Korea it was .6....lower than the flu
That is largely because of HUGE testing numbets... amazingly high in fact...which drives down that %.
Still extremely hazardous to people with weakened immune systems due to age or existing disease.
While it is true that FLU has killed thousands more, we also need to remember that there were tens of millions of flu cases.....AND THAT DISEASE HAS A VACCINE. The concern is as of yet, there is no vaccine for human Coronavirus, and that has a possibility of disturbing numbers ahead....especially since many (most) people dont even feel the need to go to a doctor since they have no serious symptoms...and may never....but are active carriers. Think typhoid Mary times several thousand folks.

Truth is WE cant make it better worrying. We can be aware as much as we can of its existence. Painfully, some of the drug companies working on an anti virul are looking at 2023 for completion of tests. That's going to be a long time with this hanging over.

Dan Wolken calls for the cancellation of the tournament. He cites too much risk in allowing players to compete against each other, especially when there's so much we don't know about the disease.

But how will he write his “Calipari is an underachiever” column if there’s no tournament.
