This could have been a mutual agreement between Cal, Whitney and his parents. I can see Cal not wanting the distraction if Whitney's Dad called him and expressed his displeasure over his son's development and in the best interest of the team, they agree to part ways. I'm just speculating here, and we'll never know what really happened.

I imagine Cal’s position is do what you feel is best.

I suspect you are correct in that we'll never know what really happened. However, if he enters the transfer portal we may get a clue. To get a waiver of the sit out rule, Whitney will almost certainly need Cal's support of the waiver.

Cal will give it to him if it comes to that.

What I mean is that I don’t see Cal coming to any agreement at all. I imagine he might try to talk some sense into the kid but if the parent is pushing it I don’t think he’s doing any bargaining.

I don't think Cal will bargain at all, but if the parent is causing trouble that could affect the team in some way, he could agree that parting ways is best for all involved.

Well yeah, but I don’t think he’d word it like that. I actually question if he deals with parents at all on that stuff.

He does not, especially these kind. They basically just came and got Kahlil and moved him out.

Ok, that's new news. My point is from the information previously reported. Any Coach when he gets word that a parent is unhappy with something about how their son is getting along in a program, they will quickly cut ties with that player and give him his blessing.

I don’t think Cal operates like that. One thing players like about him is he treats them like adults and lets them make their own decisions on these matters. He doesn’t negotiate or engage when parents start getting on him about this stuff. He likely just told Khalil to do what’s best for him and hopes that it’s at Kentucky.

Evan Daniels reports tonight that Whitney is leaning towards the NBA draft which is...a stretch.

The only other time aside from this that I heard parents/family were getting involved was in Cal's first year. The rumor was that it was Daniel Orton's father and uncle.

Something definitely went on that year, because Cal mentioned it after the season. I remember him saying, "What happened this year as far as parents will never happen again."

I'm sure all coaches at the D1 level deal with that in some ways. Cal more than others, because there's an inherent promise at UK: that you're going to be a pro after one year. If you're not only not a pro but you almost can't get off the bench, there are going to be major questions.

Whitney was an incredibly raw basketball player. Pretty much lost. I wish he would have stayed with it and improved but if you look at what UK has coming in next year, we have players like him arriving--better ones, I have to believe.

Maybe not about whether he stay or leave--but there was a ton of talk with Vanderbilt about his "circle" influencing whether he play or sit. Didn't seem to be about avoiding further injury but more should he show his flaws having been inactive so long.

Read that Whitney hasn't put his name in the transfer portal, does this mean he's going pro? I was wrong about Briscoe going to the league and a few others but with Whitney man he has a lot of work to do. Another player knocking on the door of the NBA is Michael Mulder, imagine that.
