How much of that was his/his family's fault and how much was due to the injury we'll probably never know.

Reminds me a lot of a guy like Trey Lyles, who also had an injury that cut into his season. I loved Lyles as a player but his situation was really odd and you always wondered if things were going on behind the scenes that we didn't know about.
I don't think it's similar to Trey Lyles at all. Trey Lyles missed like two and a half weeks early in the season due to an injury, if I remember correctly. Otherwise, he was one of the most consistently reliable players on a 38-1 team, offensively and defensively. I never got the suspicion that there was anymore to Lyles' situation beyond the injury.

Lyles played in 36 of 39 games that season. He missed the games from January 29 - February 10

I think all those guys were pretty reliable but I remember some speculation about Lyles and what the deal was with him.

Maybe a better comp is Ryan Harrow, but Vanderbilt was injured before he even came to UK so I give him a tad more credit.

The only early games I remember Lyles missing due to injury, were the ones in the Bahamas.

As the world turns a Mercenary U No doubt any scholarship at U.K. Where the kid doesn't play year one is wasted These kids are here for one year thatsCals pitch "Come to UK play a year and get rich " never mind that only happens about half the time, that's what he sells? Losing 6-7 players every year is the result. I just hate it

Missed three games at the end of January/early February.

My point in comparing them wasn't necessarily in the length of their absence but in the cagey way that Cal played it. There was quite a bit of speculation that Lyles had actually been suspended.

I remember something about that now.

                    This from the Lakers:

Just watched Wenyen Gabriel break the record with 28 points in the Lakers Mentality Drill. Fantastic shooting mechanics for a big.

Great. His shooting just might get him a spot on a roster.

I sure hope so. By all accounts, he and his family could use the money.

It is a total misnomer about Gabriel and his family needing money. That's a Matt Jones fairy tale. Gabriel has tweeted twice recently that it's bogus. He says his family is full of college graduates and not in need.

We are going to miss Gabriel more than anyone, imo. I wish him well. He busted his butt for 2 years and did his best. Unlike some others.

His financial situation varies depending on who you believe.

                              Good for Wenyen.

Will not step on an NBA floor this year or maybe ever. IMO.

Could've been a very good college player though. Had some things to put into his game, notably being able to score off the bounce, but I agree that the guy never took a play off. Loved his effort.

Kyle Wiltjer can also shoot the ball really well but now plays for Olympiacos. Regardless i wish Gabriel well but i still wonder what goes through the mind of these kids now a days, being a PRO is alot easier said than done...
