When our players see Briscoe and Humphries leave to play ball somewhere other than the NBA, it motivates them to follow the same path. So if Wenyen leaves to pursue a career overseas, that is showing our current players that you can leave after two years and make money. With the NBA, G League, overseas basketball options and transfers, we may never see another contributing senior at UK. Sad but true.

Sure, but as far as I can tell the system hasn't changed. What the players choose to do with their lives was always up to them. Maybe missing out on some bigger recruits has led to more of these players, but I'd rather have them for a year or two than not at all. The system has served us well imo, and you have to take the bad with the good. Before we decide this is a new phenomenon I would remind you guys of Daniel Orton, Kyle Wilcher, Darnell Dodson, Stacey Poole, etc etc...Comment

The system has served us well to this point.
I'm skeptical it can continue to serve us well unless he gets back in and starts killing it in recruiting again.
He's recruiting better than anybody save one guy, but he's consistently missing on the very top of the top. If you do that, you have to get people to return.
You simply can't lose one-and-dones, sophomores to transfer and foreign leagues, and fail to get the best of the best.
That's when the thing might start to get stagnant.

And when you just rely on high school freshmen, you run the risk that the class isn't going to be as good.
Not all #1 classes are built equally. There's been a lot of talk about this upcoming class being super weak.
You can offset this obviously by returning a couple of guys who are borderline draft picks; guys who can take over college games. And I still hold out hope that this current team can bring back two or three who will lay that foundation. But it's getting precarious at this point and I'm a tad worried about next season (assuming Jones' info on Gabriel is correct).Comment

It's undoubtedly the case that had either Zion or RJ Barrett signed with UK, our discussion would be completely different.Comment

Opinions on what K is doing to get the top recruits? None of the top recruits are choosing Duke over Kentucky because of the curriculum as they aren't staying around so that reason is off the table. Is Cal doing or saying something that other schools are using against him? I can't figure out the fascination these top recruits have with Duke.Comment

Think they're just the hot team right now. These things generally run in cycles.
It could swing back to Kentucky. Cal has been killing it already this spring so it wouldn't surprise me if we get a behemoth of a class in 2019.
Just not sure Cal stays a whole lot longer for us to get into the kind of groove we were in five or six years ago. You have to think when Brad leaves that's about it for Cal.
I just hope Cal doesn't fizzle out at the very end the way Tubby did. If you start losing your entire roster this might not end well.Comment

Others feel Capel was the main draw to Duke but I haven't heard any of Barrett, Jones, Zion or Reddish are following Capel to Pitt.
Hopefully Duke won't get the top 3 players in every class going forward but I fear they'll probably recruit OK without Capel.Comment

This is a tweet from someone named Michael McCann. G-League is raising salaries next year. While its not great money by any stretch it is a step close for some to give more thought to going early. For someone like Gabriel, who comes Sudan, this may sound like a million dollars.
Next year, G League players will earn $35,000 for the five-month regular season (a 34.6% pay increase from the previous high salary), plus housing and insurance benefits. The G League might not yet be a rival to the NCAA for most top recruits, but it's inching in that direction.
Gamers in the new NBA2K video game league will be paid $35,000 by the NBA.
And so will NBA G League players.
The NBA announced on Tuesday the salaries for the 2018-19 NBA G League season. Players under G League contracts will earn a base salary of $7,000 per month, which equates to $35,000 total for the five-month regular season.
Then there are the first-round picks in the NBA 2K League, a new eSports venture with the NBA, who will earn $35,000 over six months of gaming. 2K gamers will also receive housing, money to relocate to the city where they were drafted, medical insurance, a retirement plan, and a shot at a a share of the $1 million in prize money.
Gamers being paid the same as players?
And these kids want to skip college lol lol lol lol lolComment

Where some of these guys make money is the NBA callup. Something like 60K for a ten day contract. Throw that on 35 thousand for a five month stay, and it looks some better.
the overseas teams pay at different rates with different rules. A kid needs a good agent to even think about the pros and cons of some of the intercontinental outfits.
Some include transportation and housing and food, some others are notorious for not paying on time if at all.
It's truly a crap shoot what you can get into.Comment

I originally thought 6 players. would leave ,now I think we could lose seven guys, off of an 11 loss team. Will we be okay, sure, will we win another title under this system , seems unlikely. Don’t see how he can win another one when NOBODY wants to be a role player. When Willie and Towns and the Harrison’s lost the in the Final Four, I never dreamed that we wouldn’t be in that position again under Cal, but I just don’t see it happening again, just can’t see him winning another one unless he can figure out how to keep some guys each year.👍 1Comment

This could be why he's after Tandy and the kid from Pendleton County. That might be your only hope to actually get people to stay past their sophomore years.
Otherwise I sort of agree with you. If you have no semblance of upperclassmen the only way you win a title is if you've got tremendous freshmen. Duke did it that way in '15. But you really have to hit the lottery with those freshmen and the class itself has to be super-strong.
Other than that, though, no. You can't win titles like this with entire teams leaving every year.
Still though there's a chance we return Vanderbilt/Washington/Quade/Richards. That might be good enough, but some other things need to happen--notably the freshmen being better than their billing.Comment

Recruiting Kentucky players might be a way to build upperclassmen who are role players. The Monk/Fox team had two essential ones, and that was a very good, fun team that could've won it had a couple breaks gone their way.

Honestly, this has been the thinking all along in my mind. Many people here are quick to CUT YOUR THROAT when you suggest recruiting a few in state players. It's always "TUBBY DID THAT" or "YOU CAN'T WIN LIKE THAT" but to lobby for the JON HOOD'S of the world has never been about "LET'S HAVE A ALL INSTATE KENTUCKY KID STARTING FIVE" but more of a system where guys can develop, stay, and actually play for the FANS OF KENTUCKY and the NAME ON THE CHEST.
Quick Question everyone, ya'll remember D. Willis, D. Hawkins, D. Miller, A. Epps, Barbour, Feldhaus, Ford, Chapman, Estill, Farmer, etc. etc. etc. etc etc etc etc etc etc ?????????Comment
