Landing Montgomery and Hagans along with what we already have committed sure makes all this not so bad. Let's just hope THIS GROUP can gel early and become dominate.....

If you can't show Cal what you got in 2 years, i don't think he wants you here to be honest. He is used to elite talent and i don't think he has the time for good college players non pro material unless he absolutely has to. He has made it clear that he's playing his freshman above and beyond all no matter what the cost, it's how he sells them to Kentucky and he sticks to his word.....
I think what Cal wants is what the players want, so he usually steps back. If he had his druthers they'd all be Anthony Davis.
But that's just not feasible in the real world. In reality you get a lot of players who are on different timelines, or who are just role players. Cal knows the deal. He was around two other programs where he had a bunch of those guys, and he's had a few at UK.
I'm sure Cal knows how important players like Liggins and Miller and Doron Lamb and Josh Harrellson and Alex Poythress and Dominique Hawkins were to the program. Those weren't NBA superstars but they were incredibly valuable. They won huge games for us.
I don't think he's happy to see players like Wenyen Gabriel go. Wenyen has been really good at times and can get even better. If he does leave I don't think Cal's attitude will be, "I didn't want him anyway." That doesn't make any sense.
I just don't think Cal spends a ton of time trying to talk people into coming back to school because he isn't that kind of coach.Comment

That's almost exactly what JJ said, but I disagree. How many of us would do anything to help not only our family, but most anyone who needs help. Gabriel is a decent player and wants to use his talent to improve the lives of those he loves. I hope he stays, but their needs might make his decision difficult.Last edited by TrueblueCATfan; 04-10-2018, 01:01 PM.Comment

There's really no evidence that what you're saying here is true.

Does anyone feel that Cal doesn't mind some walking because he has something else up his sleeve??Comment

If you're going to bring in Reid Travis and that means losing Wenyen Gabriel then fine.
As long as the players aren't kicked to the curb. As long as they have places to land. Then it kind of works out for everybody.
Because we get upgrades in that case.
The trouble comes in when there aren't upgrades. I.e. when you lose players and replace them with kids who are not ready to perform at a high level the day they step in here.
I'd obviously prefer if the roster stayed put, but if the players are intent on leaving as soon as they can, then the coach has to in turn look for talent to replenish the defections.
You can't just sit back if you're Cal and hope. You have to go out there and keep plugging away just in case.
All this said, I'm sure Cal would love to keep some of our current players as a foundation. For it to go really well next season we pretty much have to.👍 1Comment

And Cal may have whiffed on his first couple attempts at wooing returners, but it's comforting to see that he's working other channels, and seems to be going hard at it.
It's pretty incredible what he's capable of when he's all in. Kind of makes you wonder if his recent perceived dip really was just a result of a little complacency.
Right now, the guy seems to be working like his life depends on it, and look how it's paying off.Comment

Things get a little wonky when he's coasting. Think this past Sweet Sixteen. Also: Wisconsin, up late. Zion Williamson, in the bag. Etc.
When it's Cal v. the world, that's when the magic tends to happen.Comment
