So the Big Name is none other than the blond bomber from Batavia, Dan Issel. He, along with some Big name from UL and another from IU, just might drum up enough interest to get some money together. Of course they will need considerable more than the $750,000 they have now.

Definitely won't see someone from IU attached, nor UofL. Issel wasn't chosen because of UK, he was chosen because of his strong ties in the league. UofL, understandably, doesn't want to be in the position again of being a second fiddle tenant, as they were at the fairgrounds. Were the NBA considering Lexington, I'd expect UK to feel the same way, and be disappointed if they didn't.

Because of the strange way the financial agreement was set up the YUM! Center seems to need another tenant.

That whole thing was wobbly from the start. Probably more now as ticket sales are going to plummet during the investigation.

I believe for this idea to ever get off the ground, someone with a background from all 3 schools will have to be interested, and the team will have to have players from these schools plus be competitive. I'm a doubter because I really don't think they will ever get enough money together to even have a shot at getting a team. And, the size of the TV market here probably isn't big enough.

Don't kid yourself, Issel's ties to UK and his name recognition with that school, the Colonels along with his ties to the NBA, has a lot to do with his being involved.

The whole thing was predicated on having A tenant. The arena committee approached a potential tenant (UofL) that wasn't really interested in a downtown location for their own arena. The authority needed a tenant, so they made the only deal they could that would get them a tenant. Otherwise, the deal dies on the vine.

They definitely need another tenant - whether it's the NBA is debatable. There's been discussion on local radio about trying to bring a hockey team in. Stranger things have happened. Hockey in Nashville? Southern California? Who'dathunkit. I sort of understand Florida, because the state is littered with northeastern retirees.

I just don't think there's a need for the local universities to be on board. If they are, that's great, but not a requirement. We might see Calipari supportive of it because it's not in his backyard.
The bigger thing is that they're not poo-pooing the plan. I'm not sure it's ever been a necessity in other communities that the local universities be active in promoting it, just don't be active in criticizing it.

I agree with this. With the loss of revenue this year from declining sales, and no apparent relief anytime soon, the YUM could use some help or the tax payers will continue to get hosed. Will the NBA come? No idea, but it's intriguing that the soccer team is doing as well as it is. Thousands in attendance every game and now a new stadium being built in Butchertown. Don't want to beat a dead horse, but Louisville lost out BIG when they made no effort to secure a casino downtown right on the river. Turn the Belle of Louisville into an upscale gambling boat with a killer restaurant. I have many, many friends who go across the river to gamble and also go to Beltera outside Cincy. That revenue on hotels etc., and the millions and millions of dollars in taxes annually could, and should stay in Louisville IMO. That would absolutely invigorate the downtown area.

Oh I don't think the local universities have to be actively involved or approve, but a name like Issel from each school, will go a long way in raising necessary money. And players from each school on the roster will help put folks in the seats. The Colonels had a mixture, with Issel, Dampier, Bud Olsen, Ron Thomas, and I believe a player from IU, but can't remember his name.

That stat was number of teams not number of players. We have more players but a Dukie is on 16 teams and only 15 teams have a UK player. They didn't mention the total number of players though.

NBA has 30 teams. I guess it's conceivable they could go to 32 as their popularity is on the rise. NFL is the nation's most popular pro league but in the under 20 crowd the NBA rules.

Still it's more likely that Lville would get another look next time a current team gets fed up with lack of support in their current market. Of course that means you're likely looking at a weak team. But--might as well start somewhere.

I misread that but still, i felt like it was ESPN's way of reaching out to the masses and helping Duke recruit...

I think you're exactly right. ESPN will do anything to help Duke and hurt UK. Fake news is not always telling false stuff, but also not telling the whole story.

CJ makes this possibility look pretty bleak. Pitinr & Jurich are gone but the stranglehold they put on the YUM makes it all but impossible to bring in the NBA even though it would help the city--and probably tremendously so. Went on to say they could renovate Freedom Hall for 3-5 hundred million to attract a team. I'm sure the taxpayers will jump at that while already strapped paying for YUM.

Jurich's effects will linger for generations. To the pleasure of most Card fans.

So, if we get an expansion team, are they the Colonels? They can't be a bird or cat and the colors can't be red or blue. The team would have to be something neutral in this state like a green and yellow horse.
