That's fine. Delete my post. However, there seems to be a stink in this thread and the overall message appears to be that these students should have just let this go, or it wasn't anything to be offended by, or they shouldn't have called for the President's head, or people are too PC these days. And I'm guessing those with that view are older, white men. Let's just call it what it is. This goes beyond what is being served on the breakfast menu.
Based on the information I see, the Mizzou President didn't do anything to curtail racism at his university. In fact, he and his folks only fanned the flame. Next time, don't ignore students who are being mistreated.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... Someone said above that it sets a bad precedent, and I agree with that. If you can draw a line between the school president and the slur by the guys in the pick-up truck and the Swastika on the wall, then obviously the president should be let go. But in this case I'm not sure such a line exists. Because it doesn't exist then theoretically anybody could stage a racial protest--or a protest of any kind--and link it directly to the CEO/President and force a resignation.
I've seen a lot of people say "PC is destroying the world" over the last few years. Usually those people are as sensitive as those they're raging against. In this case I think it fits.Comment

I think if the President had come out early on and condemed any racism of any form and this may have been averted. But I don't think he did this. I haven't read about it if he did. In this day you have to see and recognize a problem early and nip it right there or it will snowball out of control very quickly.Kentucky fan since 1971.Comment

So every time a drunk person calls someone a name the president of the ENTIRE University system should issue a statement on it? Ridiculous and stupid, just like the situation at Mizzou is ridiculous and stupid. The PC pitchfork mafia strikes again and it's sad and embarrassing for this country.

Their list of demands in post 25 of this thread are ambitious. Hiring more people of color is fine if they are the most qualified but to hire them to make the students happy???? Someone please explain to me what Tim Wolfe acknowledging his privilege as a white male has to do with the situation? Just confused on some of the demands?Comment

I think there was more than just that. Just put it this way, it wouldn't have hurt the situation any if he did that. It may not have helped but at least he could have done a little something instead of looking like he had stuck his head in the sand.Kentucky fan since 1971.Comment

When I was at Centre the black student population was 3%. I had one black professor while I was there. IIRC there was some talk about trying to make the campus more diverse, and I would imagine that in the 16 years since I graduate it has gotten better.
The thing about a college campus is that you want diversity. I know this from past experience. All-white classes taught by all-white instructors is not a great learning model because it doesn't represent the world. When these students get out, they're going to get diversity and they need to be able to participate in it. The best college classes I ever taught were split down the middle in terms of race and ethnicity.
But it's also a problem when you try to create these "safe spaces," because the world isn't safe. People say mean things. It's gotten better, but some people are mentally damaged and they talk like it's 1954 and always will. You have to be able to combat that sort of thing and engage with it. Black Southerners in the Civil Rights era couldn't just go into a hunger strike and hope that their demands were met. In this case the students seem to be wanting to stifle free speech in one of the places in the world where speech is the most safe: a college campus. If you can't handle speech on campus then you're going to fall apart emotionally when you have to get out and navigate the real world.👍 2Comment

I've got to believe there's more to this than "race hustlers". As I understand it, the university president resigned after the Board of Trustees met this morning. One would think there's some traction to the students' claims if the administration caves.Comment

No traction needed anymore. Just air your "grievances" to social media and the genie pops out the proverbial lamp and grants your wish. Obviously, though, you have to be of the left minded view for this to happen. If you're on the right, then you are just crazy and your claims are unwarranted.Isaiah 5:20👍 1Comment

It appears that some Deans don't like the chancellor either.
The deans said Loftin has shown failed leadership through a number of instances, including the elimination and eventual reinstatement of graduate assistant health insurance and the elimination of the vice chancellor for health sciences position. The deans claim Loftin created a “toxic environment through threat, fear and intimidation.â€

I don't know how anyone can think it is a good thing that the coaching staff supported the students and protested with them. As an administrator, I would fire the whole coaching staff at season's end and make sure the ring leaders of the revolt that were members of the football team were run off and their schollies pulled. I don't usually root against teams, but it would not sadden me if the Missouri team lost the rest of their games. I could tell you who I believe is behind this whole mess, but that rant would belong on a political board.👍 1Comment
