Midnight Special - Jeff Nichols' first dud, after two near-masterpieces with "Mud" and "Take Shelter." This movie, as Will noted above, was technically proficient, but boring.

Finding Dory - Adorable, funny, beautifully animated. Pixar does it again.

Sideways - Went back and watched this one again and was reminded how great it is. It moves at its own pace, it's equal turns funny and terribly sad, and it's very unique. Alexander Payne is one of the most underappreciated filmmakers working today and this might be his masterpiece (although "Election" is close).

Eye In The Sky - Great flick. Very thought-provoking and entertaining. Timely subject matter. Plus we get to see Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman in a role deserved of his talents.

        The BFG.

Spielberg takes on Roald Dahl. I read this book to my son when he was very young, which was a grievous mistake because it's a very scary book. Here, in true Spielberg fashion, the scares are stripped out for feels--and for the most part it's a gamble that pays off. The middle of the movie is a little plodding, but it's bracketed by a truly great first 30 minutes and a final act that just toes the line between sappy and heartfelt. The giant himself is rendered perfectly down to the vast kindness in his eyes, and the language games he and the female lead play are very funny.

A genuinely sweet movie that sneaks up on you, I recommend this if you have kids or if you're just looking to escape reality for a couple of hours.

          Time Lapse.

I like movies that mess with your head. The best of these--Coherence, Inception, Primer--can leave you wanting to watch the movie again to see if you can figure out the puzzle the second time. The worst feel like pale imitations, and this is what Time Lapse is. The set-up is cool and plays with the idea of causality vs. coincidence: three roommates find a strange camera that can take pictures of the future. But that set-up is wasted by wooden acting and a script that kind of gives out halfway through. There are some moments in this but not enough to make it worth the watch.

It's free on Netflix, but there are some much better kinds of movies on there if you're in the mood for head-trippy sci-fi. Start with the great Primer.

Have you seen the time travel terrorist thwarting Densel Washington movie? The name escapes me.

Deja Vu? I haven't seen that one. I've just assumed for the past 15 years that Denzel movies are turrible. I've heard otherwise about a couple of them--The Book of Eli?--but haven't seen many. John Q. I think I may've seen in the theater. Bomb.

I did like He Got Game a whole lot though.

The Book of Eli is pretty good. More style than substance, but it's all right.

Deja Vu that's the one. I don't know as I would go so far as to call it good... it is interesting in the usual time paradox ways. If you like that sort of thing, it is worth a watch. There is a mystery to be solved that is also pretty engaging.

10 Cloverfield Lane- Dynamite thriller in the mode of Hitch****************, but it had a Misery like feel to it as well. John Goodman is scary good as doomsday prepper Howard who may or may not have secrets to hide. For only three actors and the cramped quarters of a bunker, I was on the edge of my seat. The sci-fi twist at the end may throw some people off, but I loved it. This is VERY loosely tied to JJ Abrams fantastic film Cloverfield though viewers would have a hard time seeing it. See this movie if you like psychological thrillers. It is defintely a recommended viewing.

The Secret Life of Pets- Great animation and a few good laughs. The story wasn't as good as those from Pixar, but for what it was it was serviceable. There is some humor in there that kids absolutely will not get. Decent but not great.

I usually agree with you, but more of those are duds than aren't. Man on Fire is great, and American Gangster was good. Otherwise, we're talking about a lot of bad Hollywood melodrama and cliched aging badassery. The Equalizer in particular was one of the worst movies I've seen in recent memory.

Falls just outside of that 15 year window Will mentioned, but yeah, Training Day is very good.
