Wife and I saw Swiss Army Man a week ago. Good gracious it was strange, but it was really good.

I usually agree with you, but more of those are duds than aren't. Man on Fire is great, and American Gangster was good. Otherwise, we're talking about a lot of bad Hollywood melodrama and cliched aging badassery. The Equalizer in particular was one of the worst movies I've seen in recent memory.
I've always felt like Denzel is one of those actors who can carry an otherwise pedestrian movie (Equalizer comes immediately to mind).
Flight might have been bad Hollywood melodrama, but I was glued for the entire time. And don't hate on Unstoppable -- that movie was awesome, and Tony Scott's last great effort before his unfortunate suicide.Comment

Saw Ghostbusters yesterday......was surprised..expecting it to be a bomb and we actually really liked itComment

I'm just severely skeptical still. The trailers basically confirmed all my worst fears, but maybe it's not as bad as it looks/sounds.Comment

Is it blasphemous of me to say that I don't quite understand the cult of Ghostbusters? The first ones were cool, but worth the rabid defense from purists? Or rather, worth having purists in the first place? It's not like this new group set out to remake Star Wars or something.Comment

In the Twitter era things get blown up beyond all proportion. If I see it it will likely be on video, and only because I flat-out loved Bridesmaids.
But even if it were Star Wars, I don't get being so protective of something (fictional) that you'll go to ideological battle over it. Star Wars had its own controversy with the black Storm Trooper.
There's a lot of ownership in fandom. I get it in some ways, but it leads to weird fixations.Comment

I thought the first ghostbusters was mediocre. I have no desire to see another.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... I can't really think of a lot of movies where a reboot feels necessary. Star Wars is definitely one.
Usually these rehashes and remakes and reconceptualizations are just gratuitous. I'd rather see a new idea, but clearly there's a lot of $$$$ for an already established franchise. It's why bad movies inexplicably get sequels.Comment

I really want to see the Ben Hur remake. It looks good and I liked the Heston version.Isaiah 5:20Comment

Espionage movies should be remade. Some of the best one's don't age well. Even if you kept them in the same time period... My caveat would be, remake them well... Hollywood has gotten so risk averse, formulaic, and cliche; I'm not sure they can.
That Ben Hur thing as an example, at least in the trailer... it doesn't look like an improvement on the classic. I really like the original.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... That is actually the one I was thinking about. I went through this kick about a year ago re-watching classic spy films and wishing many of them were cinematically speaking, up to date.Originally posted by John Stuart MillHe who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that... The first "Ghostbusters" is revered because it's a fantastic comedy.
The writing, by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, is razor sharp and Bill Murray's performance is one of the finest comedic film performances of all time.
Lots of kids loved it because of the ghosts and the action and special effects, but the reason that its popularity has endured since its release in 84 is because it's a genuinely terrific comedy, produced by a group of guys at the height of their powers.
Some of the best one liners ever.
Possessed Dana Barrett: "I want you inside me."
Peter Venkman: "No, it sounds like you've got two or three people in there already."Last edited by KCKUKFan; 07-21-2016, 10:45 AM.Comment
