    Cal's Actual Goal Was...........

to send 8 players to the NBA, not win a national championship. This is part of his players first philosophy. What do you think? I don't see why it can't be a mutual goal of a TEAM national championship along with all players to the NBA. I have feeling a lot of people are going to be ticked off about this and I can't really blame them.

    Kentucky fan since 1971.

^ I agree. That's never going to fly among the fans.

I believe would have kept that comment to myself

Pretty sure the entire BBN wants national championships

Meh. That's been his shtick from day one. He wants championships too, but he can't them without the players, and the players only want to play coaches that can them in the league.

Well, he certainly got them well rested for their combines by getting them out of the tournament with three straight plays with no designed plays. No timeout to design one, and three straight shot clock violations.

Yeah, that's what comments like that are about. It's all part of a greater recruiting pitch. He said the same sort of stuff after the Wall year.

But it's also nice padding for him. It's like the beauty queen who doesn't win the title but wins "Best Personality" or something.

I didn't win a title? Well, okay, but I got seven players into the draft.

Cal loves to spar and joust with people, but he's also pretty sensitive to criticism and is one of these people who's always in the mode of selling his accomplishments whenever anybody challenges him.

Cal sure didn't make this fan of his and the basketball team feel any better about not winning it all. I really don't think Cal meant to say it but winning a championship is the thing that is important to me as a fan. It makes me happy when our players do well in the NBA but my priority is always UK basketball first and foremost. Cal should be more careful about what he says.

I'm not saying that he should have said this but I don't think it comes across very well, We all know how devastated he was about not winning a championship this year, and so were the players. It all just goes back to him wanting to help these kids reach their dreams and if he can win a few titles for Kentucky along the way then great. Winning and getting kids drafted all goes hand in hand, it's just the way that Cal sometimes makes these comments that rub people the wrong way.

Cal tries to get the best kids he can, which in turn will give him the best chance to win and the most kids to send to the draft. It has been his recruiting pitch since day one and it's not going to change.

Is this Cal's way of ticking off a fan base and saying ADIOS for the Pelicans job?????

As smart as Cal is marketing to fans over the past 5 years, this kind of remark really doesn't make sense to me. If you want' to blow it all up, this is a good start...........

Im not a Hall of Fame coach but at the same time, how about winning a Championship AND sending 8 guys to the NBA?? How about changing around this stupid OFFENSE that looks like $$$$ for about 25 games out of each and every season?????????? You take away Cal's ability to recruit and he's lucky if he's a top 20 coach, just saying!!!!!!!!

I understand his comment is a recruiting tool and it's what some players want to hear, but it sure doesn't set well with us old school Kentucky fans. I'm a guy that had no chance to play any sport at UK, but I would have given every drop of energy I had to win any game with KENTUCKY across my chest, and would have never given the upper level a thought doing it. I want the best players to come to UK, but I stll want them to be proud to be there.

I agree and I don't want to come across as being overly critical of Cal but his recruiting this year has not been all that good. Maybe if we would have won the championship this year Cal might have gotten the very best recruits.

Nah. He said the same exact thing five years ago, i.e. the "NBA Draft will be the greatest day in the history of this program" thing.

Cal works on a different wavelength. He's in it for the families way more than he's in it for us.

Fans can't see the players as much more than avatars. Our aims and goals are totally different. I've never felt a giddiness at seeing a UK player drafted because I don't know them personally. But I know that seeing them drafted is essential to carrying on UK's dominance, because when the draft picks dried up just a few years ago so did our Final Fours.

Which is why I get on these on local in state kid kicks because in my mind, I truly believe it means a little bit more to play for Kentucky than what it does for a one and done and out 5 star All American player. Not that guys like Stein, Towns, and others didn't love Kentucky but at the same time, who wouldn't love Kentucky for the way they are treated while they are here??? I know realistically you can't have a team full of in state kids but for the ones that are good enough to earn some time, I am pulling for them a little harder regardless of what color or race they are..

                            Just my two cents.............

Maybe and that's not a bad thing either. Honestly, who wouldn't want to send there child off to college to play for a coach like that??? Still, probably what ticks me off about Cal is that he could be ABSOLUTELY HANDS DOWN great if he would just tweak a few things. I suppose his philosophy stems from his playing days when the game was slower, I don't know???
