From reading several posts on different boards the consensus seems to be it is ok to hire a college coach as a NBA head coach but not a NBA coach with no college coaching experience as a college head coach. If true, why is this?

You can't hire somebody with no experience with recruiting high school players.

Indiana just did it, but they have clearly scraped the bottom of the barrel. Kentucky should never do something like that.

You have to have somebody who has built inroads and relationships with high school coaches, AAU coaches, etc. Pulling somebody out of the NBA with zero recruiting experience is crazy risky.

Because there's a ton more to the job than there is in the NBA. It's a little different if you have GM duties, but college recruiting is probably a bigger piece than the actual coaching.

If you don't have connections in the AAU scene, it's very hard to recruit at a high level in college.

^^^^ Would it be risky to hire someone like Stevens or Donavan that have been out of the college game for awhile? Would they still have close ties to the AAU community?

I think with guys like that you have the potential that they still have those relationships AND could use the NBA to bolster recruiting even more. This happened with Cal at Memphis.

Some of these NBA guys might just be figurehead types who are good in a locker room but really are not personalities. In fact you can see with some of them that their vanilla personalities are kind of a plus, because you have to be willing to take a back seat to the players. The head coach is just the guy over there during the game.

Erik Spoelstra's a good example of this. Great coach but it's impossible to imagine him coaching in college. He's almost a Bill Belichick sort, which I assume is part of his success. As a college coach, particularly at Kentucky, you are the show. That demands a big personality and so many of these NBA guys are not that.

It still remains very strange that (1) Texas has been super quiet, and (2) that patented tweet from Cal telling everybody he's staying never came this weekend.

I'm convinced at this point that there's interest both ways. Doesn't mean that he'll take it, but the situation has played out in a very funny way so far.

As well as he has recruited the state of Texas, he probably knows he could have his pick of local recruits if he were there. He’d likely have great teams every year without the insane pressure that comes with being at Kentucky.

                  It isn’t a crazy idea.

^^^^no...in fact the more we talk about it and think about it, this is a move that actually is a pretty sound idea, especially if the coach is at a point where money doesnt matter. Already in the hall of fame, taken three teams to the final four, been ranked number one in the nation with all three, and with his salary over the last years surely has plenty stashed away. Kids are grown, and the atmosphere in Lexington isnt nearly as welcoming as it used to be.

                    could well happen.

I just hope our AD doesn't try to get Cal to stay by offering any more money. ENOUGH, ALREADY!

Rivals guys mentioned the text over on their boards. They seemed to say that Jones quickly followed up with he didn't fully buy it, but did talk at length about how silent Cal had been.

After a historically bad season the line from UK should be "If you want to go, go."

after a time, every AD gets to the point he almost has to say.....okay, really hate to see you go, but we've done what we can. Best of luck.

Yeah I have heard them talk about that He did say he talked to someone who was as connected as anyone that he he had no idea.

I definitely think there's something there. I don't have strong feelings about Cal leaving either way - I don't have a great deal of optimism that Cal's going to be able to adapt to modern basketball and I don't think Cal really cares about the program the way he used to. So if he's gonna go, then seeya.
