Rumors circulating about Cal and Texas (UPDATE: Shaka to Marquette)

A lot of smoke about Texas dumping Smart and going after Cal. Anyone believe that is possible, seems bizarre Cal would dump the golden parachute he has here for a football school that would’nt pay him as well. I wonder if he is unhappy enough here to consider it.

    No.

I heard those rumors earlier and they sound as silly now as they did then. Cal is set up with a lifetime contract that after a few more years will guarantee him $1 mil/year for life. FOR LIFE! Why would he give that up? Under his contract he’s in absolutely zero danger of being fired no matter what he does. The man has nothing to worry about as long as he stays at UK.

He isn’t going anywhere. And while we’re at it, Jai Lucas isn’t going to UT to take Kim English’s place.

I agree with Downes. In my opinion, the only way Cal leaves UK for another bb job is if it somehow involves the NBA. And, even then, probably not as a coach.

If Texas wanted Calipari, they would have to offer him even more money than he makes here. That scenario would carry as much pressure as he has here. The state has been very good to us with recruiting so obviously he has a reputation there.

I sincerely doubt an offer will materialize but given the contract he has here, if he wants to go to another college program then so be it.

Cal’s contract is a golden parachute and a set of golden handcuffs.

There is NO WAY he would do that. Especially with his current contract.

Well, this won’t do anything to quash the rumors: Shaka’s taking the HC job at Marquette.

Writing must have been on the wall at Texas.

I saw a thing years ago where a guy (can't remember who it was but it was somebody in college basketball media) was making the argument that Texas was the best job in college basketball. Huge money, lowish pressure (although every job has pressure nowadays), massive high school talent in Texas, etc.

Oddly, I can kind of see this with Cal. I wouldn't bet any money or anything, but it wouldn't floor me.

If Texas wants to match Cal's salary then good on 'em but I am skeptical.

The Kentucky fanbase needs to be prepared for what's about to happen.

The "faaaaaaar Cal" might be about to get their wish.

Yeah - I saw that. The writer mentioned Texas and Florida as being the two best in the country for the same reasons.

I don't think he'll go, but you're right, I can see the appeal. Plus, it's hard to see Kentucky being a contender next year and it might get ugly.

You really think he’s leaving for Texas? I’m still doubtful.

I doubt it, if only because of the outrageous "Lifetime Contract."

Buuuut, if he wants a change of scenery, here's his chance:

                            1) Kentucky probably won't be a legitimate contender next year, and if we tank again, the fan base will lose their minds.
                            2) Texas has great facilities, can match the pay, and is a crazy good state for recruiting.
                            3) Cal is thoroughly miffed with the Kentucky fanbase and would love to flip the middle fingers to the loud portion of them.

This will be interesting to watch as we move into the weekend.

If I were him and I wanted to tell us to get bent, I’d stay right where I am and draw those fat checks until I reached the point where I’m getting paid for life for doing jack.

That, to me, is a much bigger middle finger than leaving.
