While Gillespie will go down as the worst hire ever, personally I didn't think Sutton was a whole lot better. And at the end, he proved his worth.

I agree, though I still question that envelope to Chris Mill's was full of cash. Just happened to "open up mysteriously". Yeah right. I think Mills still has the last triple double for us.

But yes BCG was a terrible hire. I think Kentucky fell in love with the coach who knocked off UL in Rupp in the tourney the year before. Having Edgar Sosa crying for his Mommy in the postgame was the icing on the cake. I fell in love with BCGs hard nosed style his last few years at TT. It was only when he got here that it was a nightmare.

Like BH says, the win over UofL was probably the factor most responsible for Billy Clyde getting the UK job. It would have been interesting to see what kind of coach he could have been if he had concentrated on coaching instead of being a 30 something playboy.

While they both had their demons, to deal with, coach Sutton was far and away the better of the two when it came to coaching, in my opinion.

There are also obviously different standards. I thought the football team last year was amazing, but they weren't even a top 25 team. The basketball team stayed in the top ten for the second part of the year and were seen for the most part as a work in progress (or even a disappointment). Totally different situations.

But I have very, very little emotional attachment to Kentucky football. I'm proud of them and love watching them, but I don't feel UK football hardly at all. I am a basketball person to the core because that's what I grew up with. I knew almost no UK football fans until I joined this site.
I feel Kentucky football, for sure, but when they lose it doesn't bother me for days on end like it does when we lose in basketball.

Part of that has to do with the fact that losing football games was standard operating procedure for the first thirty years of my life.

There have been two triple doubles since Mills: De'Aaron Fox against Arizona State in 2016 (14, 11, 10) and Isaiah friggin' Briscoe the same year against Ole Miss (19, 10, 11).

My dad always said that Sutton was probably the best pure basketball coach Kentucky ever had after Rupp.

I can vaguely, vaguely remember when Sutton was hired and how he was said to be the best defensive coach in the nation. Obviously his personal demons caught up to him, but I do think he stepped into a situation in Lexington that was already starting to devolve. People forget this but the Herald-Leader won a Pulitzer for documenting cheating in the basketball program before Eddie Sutton came to UK.

I was excited, for the future of UK bb, when coach Sutton was hired. Like your dad, I felt then, and still do today, that he was a tremendous coaching talent. I was sadden, but not surprised, when the news of the Emery package deal broke. There had been smoke, and even some fire (the early '50's point shaving scandal) surrounding the program before. Even to this day, though, and I'm not saying this because of any kind of bias, I don't believe the package opened accidentally. There was a lot of animosity towards the Mills family and UK when Chris signed with UK. A lot of Californians thought he should have gone to UCLA.

I've never been a conspiracy theorist and I can virtually guarantee that envelopes weren't just popping open at Emery because they were too full of money. And if one did someone would have sealed it back and gotten it on its way rather than calling the NCAA. Once the NCAA got sniffing around they certainly found some shady stuff but the way it all got started was absurd.

Eric Manual got the biggest shaft the NCAA has ever stuck to any individual.

I bet he sees some of the corruption going on today in education, like the UNC deal and just shakes his head as to how no one ever gets punished, even though he got the hammer brought down on him without enough evidence to prove it.

I remember Briscoe's more, because the team cleared out on a rebound late in the game and let Briscoe chase it down even though it was far from being a rebound he would've normally got.

Wow! Eric Manuel. Loved that guy. I believe it was the game vs Wayman Tisdale's OU Sooners game in Rupp where he got us all excited.
