Fletcher lives about 15 minutes from me and I have seen him play 6-7 times. I like him as a long-term guy but I would be shocked if he plays more than a handful of minutes per game next year.
I'd take that bet about Fletcher, though it admittedly is going to be hard for him to get on the floor. I've only seen him once but there's something about him that I like. At Kentucky though it usually comes down to opportunity.

A couple of observations I have about fans:

One thing you notice in the Cal era is fans reading recruiting rankings and trying to make grand statements about them. We've entered a time when, ironically, a player can be ranked in the double digits and he's already dismissed. You see this mostly on Rivals, where people are often talking about things they absolutely have no idea about, but it happens all across the Kentucky fandom.

Herro and Gilgeous-Alexander and Booker etc. are probably "outliers." But with a guy like Fletcher we're likely not talking about a one-and-done star; there is still a place for players who can give you something. One thing Kentucky fans have also forgotten is the need in the sport of basketball for players who can help. We saw how essential those types of guys were at Florida.

With all this said, the Cal era has proven that you can't reset the team totally and be a contender. The sport of college basketball doesn't work like that. You have to have anchors in place to allow the freshmen to blend. In 2014, maybe the most interesting test year of the entire era, we virtually reset the team. People were clamoring for a 40-0 season. We started five freshmen for the first time in the Cal era. Then we went out and looked very rough, not improving a whole lot until the SEC Tournament.

As much as we talk about individual talent and rankings and so on, this game rewards togetherness. I've sat in a ton of gyms over the last couple of years watching AAU and high school ball, and even on lower levels like my son plays on, you see teams stacked with great individuals, but often those teams are handled by teams that are trained to play together and "as a team." This is why Cal's teams usually stumble around until February: it takes a long time to get them to meld.

So more than looking at rankings and YouTube highlights, next year is going to be one of those years (again) where it'll be a question of how the pieces fit. We won't know what's what (again) until February. The only given is that if everyone from this current team leaves (which I don't think they will, but it's possible), history has shown that Kentucky will likely not be a contender.

I agree with nearly all of this. I never solely look at rankings because (as we have seen many times, good and bad) they are often incorrect.

I really like Fletcher as well. I simply think he won't be a major contributor next season. I really don't think Askew will be either and that's a big concern if Hagans doesn't return. Cal has to get another PG and really has to get another big guy as well.

Next year's class is very good, a lot of legit players and they are "rated" as being much better overall than this past year's class. But, without some combination of IQ, Hagans, EJ returning (assuming Juzang and Brooks do)I think we could have some limitations as a team.

The players are meeting with Cal individually this morning and afternoon. I’d expect some decisions to start coming in over the next couple weeks. I would greatly temper my expectations of getting anyone from the starting lineup back.

I doubt it's meaningful but Kyle Tucker of The Athletic says in a piece about Quickley that he gets a real 'he's coming back' vibe from him. These people are all gonna have to make the best decisions for themselves, but getting him back next year could be...huge.

Interesting wrinkle this year is that their may be no pre-draft workouts. No combine either, possibly. Which means all the NBA guys will know about the players is their college performances.

May make a different for players like Hagans and Montgomery.

Yep. I kinda think there might be something to the 'not playing the tournament' stuff though. If this team sucked and didn't make the tournament it'd be one thing, but this team had a chance - they weren't the favorites but they had the chance - to win a national title. Just having that capability and not getting to play it because of this weirdness has to eat at you.

If you don't have guaranteed millions waiting for you, I can see it being compelling.

On the flip side, there are liable to be many families in really bad financial situations due to corona. That may push some of these borderline players into the draft.

I wonder if NBA offers will be less because the GM's won't be able to see the players work out under their supervision?

Believe the salary structure is set regardless.

Player salaries as far as rookies are set (with some % variances) under the NBAs collective bargaining agreement. It's one reason why a high first round pick that doesnt pan out can really be rough on a team. They aren't like football...if an NBA kid signs for 12 mill over three years, he gets it.

Ashton Hagans posted something on Instagram yesterday that he is ready to run it back, meaning he may be returning a Junior year. I feel both he and Quickly will return for unfinished business. Many players do not have home gyms and if NBA camps do take place you will have players out of shape, smart move may be to come back.

With that being said, i can only imagine how Hagans has felt through all this. He was told to stay home and watched his team make a great comeback on the road thinking he was going to be able to suit up and redeem himself then just like that, it was gone. Hopefully this humbled him in many ways and if he does return, let's hope his decision making on the court and jump shot continues to improve...

On the flip side, if Hagan's does return let's hope both Boston and Clarke stays committed. but hearing Askew(Next Trae Young) could be the man out...

The good and bad of next year is that we might be looking at a lot of really stacked teams.

I think IQ, Maxey, and Richards are gone. Everyone else stays.

All three should stay unless they are just looking forward to the D league.
