The Coronavirus and College Basketball's Postseason

Are we going to see conference tournaments cancelled this week, or perhaps parts of the NCAA Tournament? Or maybe a situation where no fans are allowed in arenas?

It looks like fears about the virus are just beginning to pick up, so it's hard to say what's going to happen. But things look a little unpredictable out there, both in the real world and the sports world.

Already happening at the lower divisions.

I can't see the money hungry NCAA doing anything like this for March Madness.

I would think that the NCAA tournament is still in fine shape, for spectators and players. It's still relatively early in the panic stage, and there's way too much money at stake for the NCAA.

I do wonder if attendance might be down a little bit in Nashville next weekend. Tickets might be cheaper or easier to come by. One of the reasons I don't do the SEC tournament with the family anymore is because it has become too expensive in Nashville. Impossible to get in the building for a Kentucky session without dropping a huge wad of cash. I'd almost consider going now if my father wasn't pushing 70 with a heart condition.

I'm wondering if this is a "fear sells" situation or if people are just on edge because of the shakiness across the world right now, from uneasy alliances between countries to public feuds between allies to protests all over the world, etc.

It's an interesting time to be alive but I don't think your average person feels like this is an in-control world much of the time. Things feel unpredictable, particularly in America where we have a president who doesn't mind a bit of unpredictability in his daily regimen.

For that reason it's really impossible to foresee what might happen with the games this weekend and going forward.

Oddly though this thing feels a lot different.

It could be because we're all tied in to social media now and information hits us a lot faster. Even 10 years ago with the swine flu it was pretty uncommon for people to be on social media as much as we are now, where it's begun to consume our lives.

We actually thought our daughter, who was about 2 at the time, had swine flu. I remember being a bit freaked about it because of that. But this seems to a whole different ballgame.

Social media, as always, makes things worse.

I wasn't going to worry about the coronavirus until the markets plunged, and it happened today. I will reserve judgment to see how it rebounds.

This entire thing annoys the hell out of me and frankly pisses me off. This has been needlessly blown up into a worldwide catastrophe that is causing major damage in the economy, with stock markets, within multiple industries (including mine) that will be long lasting and cause major problems.

Yes it is serious, so is the flu and a million other things that don't get hyped like this has. It's media and fear driven and it's complete BS.

The market has been "plunging" and making ridiculous rallies in the next day or two for a week. When the dow get's below 23K it will be expected and interesting news. If it goes below 15K, things are getting serious.

I am still going to the SEC tourney. I have hand sanitizer and will use it. I expect to see plenty of hand sanitizer at restaurants and other venues.
