Here's one big way this could bite everything in the backside.
What happens if the NBA increases it's draft size? Say it has a two round primary draft, and then implements a secondary or supplemental draft of 1 or two rounds? We're already talking about this involving an amendment of the CBA. What if they REALLY decide to draw talent into the G league, by giving real access to a talent pool.
Would be a perfectly corporate way to snag a large pool of talent to prey upon, pay them jack squat, and then see what develops. And, ultimately, leave college basketball with a crop of low budget talent to fight over.Comment

From the college perspective, this doesn't really solve the one and done thing. I would think you will still have quite a few players in college for one year trying to raise their draft stock unless EVERYONE who is any good goes to the G league in a minor league style draft. After almost a decade of OAD here at UK, I think I'm over it. When we have the transcendent talent it's OK, but generally, I dislike only having a player around for a year. I like getting to know them, watching their development etc.Comment

I was actually going to start a thread on this very thing. I know they wear UK uniforms but when we got beat by Kansas I was kinda like meh, I dont know any of these guys. Also this one and done method hasn't proven anymore effective than the old traditional 4 year player. Before it comes up...this is in no way a criticism of Cal, I honestly dont know how he could change it, you dont recruit for less. Maybe its because we have so many new ones this year, I feel like Im watching someone elses team. If they are good enough they will be gone soon enough too and we will be looking at Cats in the NBA as if it transfers to the success of UK basketball. IMO, it doesn't. I am happy for the kids that can get rich in the NBA but all in all the NBA is a different animal and I dont care that much about it. I care about UK basketball. I dont have an answer, I do know this is the lowest my interest in UK basketball has been in 30 years.
To take things one step further, I'm beginning to doubt that we'll ever win another championship with the OAD model since we couldn't win with the 38-1 team. The tournament format is tough enough as it is and, let's face it, we never seem to get the 'Duke Draw'. GBB.Last edited by Catgrad7072; 11-18-2017, 08:58 AM.👍 1Comment

In Cal's tenure, I've seen the potential for a title at least five times.
You think there's one-and-done fatigue and a general sense of fan disinterest now? Let's see what happens when Cal leaves, and the poor bastard who has to follow him goes out recruiting. Especially if all the dynamite talent is playing in the D League. Kentucky fans are the best and the worst: in ten years, we'll be looking back on these days as the Glory Years. We don't know how good we really do have it.Last edited by KCKUKFan; 11-18-2017, 09:44 AM.👍 1Comment

Cal has been to four final fours in eight years, won a title, has won repeated SEC regular season/SEC tournament titles, and has been to two other elite eights. To say nothing of the fact that we started 38-0, the only team to ever do that.
No other team or coach has had anywhere close to this level of consistent success in the past eight years, unless you count Duke's one more title. And if you do that, you have to count the fact that they lost in the first round to Mercer and Lehigh and South Carolina in that same time period, the sort of embarrassing flame-out that Cal just has not had, unless you count the year where our best player tore his ACL.Last edited by KCKUKFan; 11-18-2017, 09:47 AM.👍 2Comment

Good string of posts there KCKUKFan. While I may hate the model, I love the results.Isaiah 5:20Comment

Seems like our fan base is more divided now than ever before but luckily for me, i get to tune in and watch perhaps the best Coach in the game coach my Boston Celtics on a nightly basis. I doubt he would ever leave Boston to replace Calipari because in Boston Brad is quickly becoming legend there. I hate the fact that every year i have to watch "junk" Kentucky basketball for a couple of months and hope that it " all comes together" at the right time but hey, it's the way of the new world of college basketball. Cal has overchieved in many ways but also underachieved in some aspects, it is what it is..................Comment

This is demonstratively FALSE.

What does 38-0 mean? Nothing really. I guess different people see different things. Success can be measured in different ways. Ultimately you play for championships. To know what we have done year to year as far as sec championships etc, I would have to look it up. The sec has been down for several years so is it our talent of the lack of elsewhere? I would take 5 or 6 losses and a championship any day. I cant argue we haven't had some success, we have. I honestly dont even remember what we did in the SEC tourney 2, 3, or 4 years ago without doing an internet search. I remember championships. However, my post wasn't really to debate any points in particular, more about how I feel. I am really hoping this team grows on me and I feel different in a couple of months.
My point is that we've had more success than literally EVERY OTHER COLLEGE BASKETBALL TEAM during Cal's tenure. Wins, Final Fours, Elite Eights, conference titles. The only school with more titles is Duke, another school that recruits like we do, with two in that time frame compared to our one.
So I'm not sure what more you really want. Cal puts in a position to be there in the hunt in March literally every year. Isn't that all we can ask for?👍 1Comment
