KSR this morning reported that Illinois is offering Tony Bennett close to $5 million a year to be their coach.

And not only could they land Michael, his top 25 class of 2018 younger brother Jontay is going to reclassify so he can play with his brother next season.

Good. The more competitive the SEC, the better for us.

Can't see how that'd be anything more than a lateral move. The only upside I can see is Illinois doesn't have the academic standards of UVA.

I read an interesting article the other day that claimed the Illinois job has huge recruiting potential. If true, there's that. But it isn't like Bennett's had trouble getting good players to come to UVA, so it might be a wash.

Personally, I'd stick with UVA and the ACC, but I'm also biased. I just like the school and the town.

Had I been anything more than a solid B student in high school, UVA would've been my school of choice.

Illinois does have that Chicago connection that you could exploit.

You would think that Chicago would be a pretty hotspot to recruit in.

I could've been, but you couldn't pay me to care in high school.

Once I'd screwed around in community college, taken time to "find myself," and finally decided that I wanted to get serious about college, UVA quickly became my dream school. Problem was, at that point the dream was long dead.

Illinois has always been a sleeping giant. If they could have kept Self they would Kansas today, maybe better. I think Bennett has done as well as he can at UVA. He's probably ready to move on. He could hold out for IU. He was asked for that job before Crean and turned it down. He might be ready to go there now.

And yes, the Chicago connection is the money-maker at Illinois. Not sure if Bennett's an exciting enough guy to properly exploit it.

His style of coaching will always hold him back. The top athletes don't want to play slow down basketball. Also about UVA is that they have high academic standards. They will never be able to get high level players unless they loosen up. I doubt that happens.

I almost went to U of L. True story, I was sitting on the ferris wheel at Kentucky Kingdom the weekend before graduation and decided I had no desire to go to U of L. I spent a year at community college and then transferred to UK.

Bs were good enough for UK at the time.

A bunch of guys from my high school went straight to UofL on that UPS deal that was popular in the early oughts. I don't know that any of them survived.

Is that program still around? I was wondering about that the other day.

I remember a rep coming to talk to my high school about it - at the time I was going to be a music major, and there was no chance I'd be able to do that and work at UPS, or I'd have been interested.
