I loved Tubby up until the time he was asked by a reporter about selling Kentucky to recruits. He responded with something along the lines of that he doesn't have to sell Kentucky. The name Kentucky sells itself. This was asked at a time when we were losing out on good players. Players who were long and athletic. Players who can shoot and guard and play multiple positions. Yet we were getting guys who fit the old mold of what it was to be a basketball player. We couldn't slide shooting guards over to point guard or power forwards to the center or small spot. We were playing guys like Brandon Stockton, Michael Porter, Woo, Sheray, Shagari. That's when the Tubby style got old. And it was a slow burn. Granted there were some great years with him, but as the years went on, it was obvious a change was definitely in order. I liked Tubby. For a while. I wouldn't go so far as to say he took us back to the Stone Age. The Iron Age was more appropriate.
Absolutely. The funny thing is, BJD mentioned the quality of players brought in under Tubby versus that of BCG, but had Gillispie stayed around a 3rd year, he would've been stuck with players of a similar caliber.

Also, remember a lot of the kids he recruited - Vinny Zollo, Konner Tucker, that 8th grader that wound up playing Division 2. If that guy outworked Tubby on the recruiting trail, he must not have been working smart.

This is also a guy that started Landon Slone* over Joe Crawford for part of the season.

        Edit - *Doh

          ^ Landon Slone, actually.

I vaguely remember Slone playing but don't remember him starting?

I do remember Mark Coury starting every game, hilariously.

Don't forget Dakota Euton and KC Ross-Miller. I guess he could've been the first of a long list of successful hyphenated names. Who was the 8th grader that had the longer hair? I can picture him but can't think of his name.

Michael Avery. Played at Sonoma State. Yeah, Billy G was a tireless worker just a bad fit.

Doh! Landon Foster was the punter...which wouldn't be that surprising for Billy G.

I could be mistaken about Slone starting - it's possible he didn't.

I drove to Lexington Catholic High once to watch KC Ross-Miller play a high school game.

I think I knew then that Kentucky was in serious trouble.

Looking back on it now, BCG's recruiting at UK almost seems like self-sabotage. Will already mentioned the rumors about him trying to back out after agreeing to the job. The guy was pulling in players at TAMU that I'd have been more than happy to have had at UK, then he got here and KC Ross-Miller was his ceiling?

                              Fishy.

I'll take "Do we STILL think BCG was better than Tubby?" for $2000.
