UK football searching for solutions to its offensive woes

A Kentucky offense that hummed like a sports car in the first half at South Carolina early in the season seemed to stall completely at various points during the Cats’ late slide.
There was plenty of blame to go around on UK’s sputtering offense, which despite returning a bulk of its playmakers, averaged just 24.7 points and saw decreases in several other key categories.
But it’s not as simple as a change of plan or a tweak at a key position, Coach Mark Stoops said in a roundtable interview on Tuesday.
“I think we have to look at what we’re doing with X’s and O’s and coaching,” he said. “That’s part of it.”

I get this sinking feeling that CMS doesn't know how to fix the offense.

The thing about that is he doesn't really have to know how to himself, but he does have to hire a coaching/ coordinator group that has a plan and is committed to recruiting the proper players and talents to fulfill that plan. For example: I have no problem at all if Kentucky wants to pattern themselves after a UT or a Bama to a team that is known to run. There are things you need as a team to do that. I think the open passing offense is just as enjoyable, but it takes a different style of talent base.
I think this crew has done a remarkable job in recruiting, but I'm not real clear on what direction they want to go.

I really think Coach Stoops would rather have an offense that can grind it out to give his defense time to regroup and rest. I'm also sure he is very discouraged that there were several occaisions inside the ten and on third/fourth and a yard that his team was not 'man' enough to get that short yardage.

IF and it is a mighty huge IF some of the rumors are true and that one or more receivers refuse to run crossing/ middle routes and you have to keep our tight end and backs in to block, then we could well be looking at some highly ballyhooed guys seeing bench time or transfer time. If your passing tree is all fifteen yards down the field to one sideline or another, then you make the defender's job a lot easier. AND if those rumors are even partially true and the coaching staff hasn't addressed it.....well....then there's really a bigger issue that has to be fixed first.

today on KSR coach Stoops said that the offense must be multiple. I agree and think we need two different types of qb.

Or, perhaps, just one like Dak Prescott, Joshua Dobbs or Lamar Jackson. A player that's very quick and athletic who can throw well enough to keep defenses honest.

In other words, we need to find another Randall Cobb. I would love to see another Man like him in the backfield.

Except, I'd like for him to be a full-time QB.

It would be nice to recruit a future NFL player right out of the back yard of every College football powerhouse with a rich tradition, every year. Unfortunately, players like Randall Cobb are few and far between. UT snubbed him and UK was lucky to recognize how great he was. How can you measure how big a heart or how competitive a player is? If a staff had that ability, they would never miss on recruits.

I guess we are finding out now how much talent Rich Brooks had in in finding quite a few of those style players. He missed on his share, to be sure, but he somehow managed to identify some guys that may have been under-rated and were football players.....no matter what position they had been listed as. We could sure use some luck in that regard with the guys coming in. I hope maturity helps the kids that are here now, and the redshirt class PLUS this incoming crew adds to that.

Lamar Jackson lost his job to Bolin, no? But together Bolin and Jackson work. Thank you for making my point.

I hate how UK fan says "one guy". We get creamed by teams that use more than one QB regularly.

Personally, I think Jojo would make a decent running QB to pair with Barker.

IIRC, the three examples I gave destroyed us, this past season, and none of them split reps with another QB (including Jackson after he entered the game).

BTW, John, who were some of the teams that used two QB's against us last season?

                              Fixed that for you.

                              ULL did
                              USC did
UF did not, they had a roided guy and should have to vacate the win
                              UMo did
                              EKU did not
                              AU did not
                              MSU did
UTK did not - ? I swear I remember a wildcat package. I am only looking at box scores for passing attempts. I'll miss 'em if they didn't throw once.
                              UGA did
                              Vandy didn't
                              Charlotte didn't
and of course UL, which you dismiss, but proves my point.
